Rhetoric

Despite the rhetoric, big government has actually grown under Reagan and Thatcher. The Friedmans consider why this is - and what we can do now to change it. 

The question is rhetorical. Once we learn from data, the quality of learning and the reliability of the obtained knowledge are conditioned by the quahty of the data. However, some examples of how data affect the results and the conclusions we draw from them may be of interest.

Does a Silylene-Complex exist This rhetorical question is the title of a theoretical paper published in 1983 [84], As a result of an ab-initio calculation, the authors came to the conclusion that a moderately positive answer can be given. However, silylene complexes are thermodynamically less stable than carbene complexes (the MSi bond energy for the hypothetical complex (OC)5Cr = Si(OH)H is 29.6 kcal/mol, the bond energy of the MC bond in (OC)5Cr = C(OH)H is 44.4 kcal/mol) [85], and therefore silylene complexes should be difficult to isolate. 

Various types of water conditioning equipment are available to provide multiple pretreatment functions in the same tank or pressure vessel. For the most part, the technologies employed by the manufacturers are not revolutionary, despite considerable rhetoric and deliberately confusing technical explanations, as these units simply contain two or three different types of media of differing densities. 

Despite the rhetoric surrounding the subject of magnetic water treatment, some useful information can be gleaned from technical papers and supplier s literature (extracts of which are reported below), which may help the reader form an informed opinion on the benefits or otherwise of this form of pretreatment.

If nonproliferation considerations have not led to official opposition to nuclear power, their effect on fuel cycle policy has been profound. These examples suggest how reductionist explanations of behavioral are translated into a moral rhetoric and a guide to social policies. Of course Phillips is correct to point out, as he does here, that even decorated scientists can unscientifically foreclose areas of investigation simply because of their own prejudices. Yet what explains the reluctance of scientists to affirm clairvoyant chemistry What Phillips fails to take into account is the rhetorical persuasiveness of the mass spectroscope. Science persuades on the basis of instruments and the visual displays they help create and on the reproducibility of experimental data from one similarly equipped laboratory to another. Individualized direct perception simply cannot match the rhetorical power of the modern laboratory.

Soddy was fond of this rhetorical flourish and frequently advanced his own figures about radium/coal equivalents. Weart notes that Crookes claimed in 1903 the energy locked within one gram of radium, he calculated, could hoist the entire [British Navy] fleet several thousand feet into the air (Weart 1988, 25).
