This short review cannot be comprehensive as of the exponential increase of the literature dealing with new procedures and applications. Table 2 summarizes selected data and lists fields of application. For a more inclusive view on the subject the interested reader is referred to existing monographs6-161 or to the critical biennial review in Analytical Chemistry. As the readers of this general volume on membranes most likely are acquainted with electro-analytical sensors, this article will be limited to the introduction of a theoretical approach which might be helpful also to researchers in the bio-membrane field. 

The active state of luminescence spectrometry today may be judged ly an examination of the 1988 issue of Fundamental Reviews of Analytical Chemistry (78), which divides its report titled Molecular Fluorescence, Phosphorescence, and Chemiluminescence Spectrometry into about 27 specialized topical areas, depending on how you choose to count all the subdivisions. This profusion of luminescence topics in Fundamental Reviews is just the tip of the iceberg, because it omits all publications not primarily concerned with analytical applications. Fundamental Reviews does, however, represent a good cross-section of the available techniques because nearly every method for using luminescence in scientific studies eventually finds a use in some form of chemical analysis. Since it would be impossible to mention here all of the current important applications and developments in the entire universe of luminescence, this report continues with a look at progress in a few current areas that seem significant to the author for their potential impact on future work.

It seems obvious that the miniaturisation first started in the analytical arena. After a number of conferences on analytical chemistry, the first conference devoted to microsystems, chemistry and life science p-TAS was organised at Enschede (The Netherlands) in November 1994. In the following years I was asked for a number of review articles about this topic. Last year I found out that almost all my colleagues in the field suffered from a similar problem an excessive amount of writing The Tab on a chip idea has really taken off in the public interest That is why we decided to put a comprehensive volume together that could then be referred to instead of continuously publishing review articles here and there. 

A number of the most common potentiometric electrode systems and their applications are summarized in Table 2.2. Additional information is available in the biennial reviews of Analytical Chemistry within the section on potentiometric measurements. 

His experience in mechanistic studies was most valuable in critical evaluation of numerous mechanisms in the preparation of the largest existing collection of electrochemical data [ii, iii], Meites was an excellent teacher of analytical chemistry [iv, v] and an editor of the Handbook of Analytical Chemistry [vi], containing numerous electrochemical data, such as redox potentials, pKa values, stability constants, etc. Author of 204 publications, he was the founding editor of Critical Reviews in Analytical Chemistry and served on the commi-sion of IUPAC dealing with electroanalytical chemistry. He received the Benedetti-Pichler Award (1983) for his achievements in analytical chemistry.

The number of applications of atomic techniques based on solid or slurry sampling is so large that only a comparatively minute fraction is discussed in this section. Interested readers are referred to the biannual reviews of Analytical Chemistry and the atomic spectroscopy update in the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry, among other sources, for more extensive information. A specific review of the uses of graphite atomizers modified with high-melting carbides has been published by Volynsky that includes virtually all metals determined in this manner [74].

The biennial applications reviews in Analytical Chemistry are most useful, in-depth, comprehensive reviews by practitioners in the respective fields of the relevant literature and are invaluable sources for guides to the literature and highly recommended. Applications reviews cover targeted materials while in alternating years fundamental reviews deal with specific analytical techniques (the latter are referenced in later sections in this chapter on specific techniques). It will be going beyond the scope of the present review to give a detailed description of the techniques available, or to provide a comprehensive hst of aU methods used in surface analysis. Such information could be found in a number of monographs and review papers Analytical Chemistry publishes reviews every two years on the latest developments in surface characterization methods". We will attempt to discuss briefly the most powerful and most readily available methods apphcable to routine gold-thiol monolayer analysis with particular emphasis on the kind of information which can be obtained from these systems. 

The nomenclature for thermal analysis and calorimetry is presently under review, so that recent developments and calorimetric methods may be included. The recommendations approved by the ICTA Council and by lUPAC are reported by Dr Robert C. Mackenzie in Treatise on Analytical Chemistry, Part 1, Vol. 12, Section J, ed. P. J. Hiving, Wiley, New York, 2nd edn., 1983. A provisional version was also given in For Better Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, ed. J. O. Hill, ICTA, Edition III, 1991. However, this has not been approved by ICTA Council. A further revision is in preparation.
