The first defect, described in 1962 is, in fact, one of the rarest (Luft s syndrome). It arises from the uncoupling of mitochondria. The resting metabolic rate is markedly raised, there is profuse sweating, fever and generalised muscle weakness. The mitochondria of these patients have an increased permeability, not so much to protons, as in brown adipose tissue mitochondria, but to cations, such as Ca, the entry of which similarly dissipates the proton motive force. [Pg.208]

The energy generated by metabolism of the macronutrients is used for three energy-requiring processes that occur in the body resting metabolic rate, thermic effect of food (formerly termed specific dynamic action), and physical activity. [Pg.357]

Body-fat analyses and resting metabolic rate assessments will be performed at a local fitness club during special event. [Pg.368]

Each service will be available as a complete program or as separate service components. The complete Stay Fit Program will cost 130, which includes one of each of the three services. Separate component costs are body-fat analysis ( 65), resting metabolic rate ( 60), and nutritional counseling ( 35). The basic Med Check Program will cost 95, which will include an evaluation of the patient s medications (including a written report), patient education for identified... [Pg.376]

The services will be provided in a new service area in the Feel Great Pharmacy. The service area will contain testing equipment, a computer, chairs, and a workspace. It will be made private through the use of cubicle dividers. Pharmacists will provide most of the services, except the body-fat analysis and resting metabolic rate assessments, which will be provided by a medical technician. An appointment system will be used so that extra staff can be present during delivery of the new services. [Pg.377]

The other major component of daily energy expenditure is due to physical activity. For most individuals in the United States, physical activity accounts for 15%-30% of the total daily energy. Most people can sustain metabolic rates 8-10 times their resting value (8-10 METS or multiples of the resting metabolic rate) with reasonably strenuous activi-... [Pg.249]

RMR + Physical Activity + DIT where RMR is the resting metabolic rate and DIT is diet-induced thermogenesis. BMR (basal metabolic rate) is used interchangeably with RMR in this equation. [Pg.7]
