Resole Phenolics

Health and Safety. Eree phenols may be present in phenoHc novolacs and resoles. Phenol [108-95-2] is poisonous and caustic, irritating the skin and mucous membranes. Eormaldehyde and ammonia [7764-41-7] are often emitted during the cure of novolacs and must be properly vented. Eormaldehyde is Hsted as a human carcinogen worker exposure and emissions are controUed by OSHA and the EPA. [Pg.19]

Acid Curing. Urea-formaldehyde resins and resol-phenol-formaldehyde resins can be acid-cured by wastes from the production of maleic anhydride [1902]. The waste from the production of maleic anhydride contains up to 50% maleic anhydride, in addition to phthalic anhydride, citraconic anhydride, benzoic acid, o-tolulic acid, and phthalide. The plugging solution is prepared by mixing a urea-formaldehyde resin with a phenol-formaldehyde resin, adding the waste from production of maleic anhydride, and mixing thoroughly. [Pg.278]

Macrospheres made from resol phenolic resins, with diameters of 0.2-5.0 mm, are also used for syntactic foams118). [Pg.70]

Resols (phenol-formaldehyde resins) are commercially used for effective crosslinking of EPDM in the production of thermoplastic vulcanisates [8]. General studies on rubber crosslinking for different diene rubbers are presented here. [Pg.209]

Using the classical resol chemistry, Asai and coworkers patented new molded materials.Added to the resol phenolic resin are inorganic fiber, a silica powder, and a rubber component. The prepared phenolic resin composition was noted to have excellent resistance to abrasive wear and to heat shock, as well as excellent mechanical strength. As such, this material is very suitable for the fabrication of engine parts such as pulleys. These pulleys are currently fabricated from heavier and more expensive materials. [Pg.2090]

Phenolic Resins. Phenolic resins (qv) are formed by the reaction of phenol [108-95-2], C H O, and formaldehyde [50-00-0], CH20. If basic conditions and an excess of formaldehyde are used, the result is a resole phenolic resin, which will cure by itself liberating water. If an acid catalyst and an excess of phenol are used, the result is a novolac phenolic resin, which is not self-curing. Novolac phenolic resins are typically formulated to contain a curing agent which is most often a material known as hexamethylenetetraamine [100-97-0], C6H12N4. Phenolic resin adhesives are found in film or solution... [Pg.233]

Both resole and novolac phenolics are used in structural adhesives, although novolac phenolics predominate. The resole phenolic structure is obtained by heating phenol in an excess of formaldehyde in the presence of base to obtain a structure similar to that shown below. [Pg.619]

Further condensation can be obtained by heating the resole again to continue the reaction of the methylol groups. This further condensation, however, results in the evolution of gas which could result in a porous bondline. This evolution of small molecules limits the utility of resole phenolics in structural adhesives. Novolac phenolic resins have a structure similar to that shown in Pig. 1 and they are obtained by heating formaldehyde in the presence of excess phenol. As one can see, the novolac structure contains no residual methylol groups. Novolacs will not cure with themselves as do resoles, but they can be cross-linked by means of hexamethylene tetramine ( HEXA"). This is also shown in Pig. 1. [Pg.619]
