Other types of resistance measurements, especially also involving the rebar network, have been apphed. Commercially available instruments combine half-cell potential mapping with resistance measurements between the electrode and the rebars. This results in resistance maps, however, conversion to true resistivity is much more difficult because the cell constant is also influenced by the cover depth to the steel bars and the size of the external electrode. [Pg.286]

These inmitive concepts stand at the foundation of the electrical SHM methods for composite materials. This approach is deemed self-sensing because it relies entirely on measuring a material property (i.e., electrical characteristic) and does not require an additional transduction sensor the only instrumentation that needs to be installed on the composite structure consists of the electrodes. In the case of composite transport aircraft, the conductive screen skins currently used to mitigate lightning strike could potentially also serve as the measuring electrodes. Sensors are distributed equally in various areas of the stability chamber no less than 2 inches from any wall. A set of sensors should be placed near or at the temperature and/or humidity controller of the chamber, as the controller will maintain the set-point temperature and/or humidity within the chamber during normal use. For a typical walk-in chamber, a minimum of 24 thermocouples and six resistance-transmitting devices are recommended for use in the mapping study. For a benchtop or reach-in chamber, a reduced number of sensors may be used. It is important to note that regardless of the size of the chamber, the placement pattern of the sensors should be such that any potential hot or cold spots are mapped, particularly those areas near the door and comers of the chamber. Typical sensor placement patterns for a reach-in and walk-in chamber are shown in Figures 16.1 and 16.2, respectively. In these examples, the extremities of the chamber (i.e., top and bottom) have a larger number of sensors than the middle of the chamber, since these areas would have a greater probability of either hot or cold spots, due to the airflow pattern within the stability chamber. [Pg.247]

The first U.S. government-approved scientific investigation in thirty years of the therapeutic potential of psilocybin was concluded in the fall of 2003. At the University of Arizona at Tucson, Dr. Francisco Moreno, with the assistance of Dr. Chris Wiegand, administered psilocybin as a potential therapeutic treatment to ten subjects with treatment-resistant chronic obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The Tucson study is funded by the Heffter Research Institute and MAPS. This study was initiated after the publication in the medical literature of several case histories in which patients with OCD self-administered psilocybin mushrooms in a nonmedical, recreational context. They reported that their OCD symptoms were reduced or eliminated for varying periods of time after their mushroom experience. [Pg.157]
