Semiconductors are materials that are characterized by resistivities iatermediate between those of metals and of iasulators. The study of organic semiconductors has grown from research on conductivity mechanisms and stmcture—property relationships ia soHds to iaclude appHcations-based research on working semiconductor junction devices. Organic materials are now used ia transistors, photochromic devices, and commercially viable light-emitting diodes, and the utility of organic semiconductors continues to iacrease. [Pg.236]

Physical Properties Electrical. Electrical properties have been the main focus of study of organic semiconductors, and conductivity studies on organic materials have led to the development of materials with extremely low resistivities and large anisotropies. Chemical Resistance. Table 2 shows the chemical resistance of PVA fiber (40). The fiber exhibits markedly high resistance to organic solvents, oils, salts, and alkaU. In particular, the fiber has unique resistance to alkaU, and is hence widely used in the form of a paper principally comprising it and as reinforcing material for cement as a replacement of asbestos. [Pg.341]

Unsaturated Polyesters. There are two approaches used to provide flame retardancy to unsaturated polyesters. These materials can be made flame resistant by incorporating halogen when made, or by adding some organic halogen compound when cured. In either case a synergist is needed. Ceramic, Metal, and Liquid Membranes. The discussion so far implies that membrane materials are organic polymers and, in fact, the vast majority of membranes used commercially are polymer based. However, interest in membranes formed from less conventional materials has increased. Ceramic membranes, a special class of microporous membranes, are being used in ultrafHtration and microfiltration appHcations, for which solvent resistance and thermal stabHity are required. Dense metal membranes, particularly palladium membranes, are being considered for the separation of hydrogen from gas mixtures, and supported or emulsified Hquid films are being developed for coupled and facHitated transport processes. [Pg.61]

Noryl is a rigid dimensionally stable material. Dimensional stabiUty results from a combination of low mold shrinkage, low coefficient of thermal expansion (5.9 x 10 per° C), good creep resistance (0.6—0.8% in 300 h at 13.8 MPa (2000 psi)), and the lowest water absorption rate of any of the engineering thermoplastics (0.07% in 24 h at room temperature). Noryl resins are completely stable to hydrolysis. They are not affected by aqueous acids or bases and have good resistance to some organic solvents, but they are attacked by aromatic or chlorinated aUphatic compounds. [Pg.331]
