Since monoterpenes are volatile, large amounts can only be accumulated in specialized structures. Several plant families, e.g., the Lamiaceae and Asterace, have glandular trichomes with secretory cells that produce terpenes and secrete them into a shared subcuticular storage cavity (Croteau et al., 2005). Similarly, conifers accumulate oleoresin, a complex mixture of mono-, sesqui-, and diterpenes, in resin blisters or ducts, which are covered by a layer of epithelial cells that synthesize and secrete the terpenes into the lumen (Trapp and Croteau, 2001). As in the case of the conifers, many other plants accumulate monoterpenes in mixtures containing the larger sesqui- and diterpenes, rather than monterpenes alone. [Pg.36]

Special vinyl acetate copolymer paints have been developed with gready improved resistance to blistering or peeling when immersed in water. This property allows better cleaning and use in very humid environments. These lattices exhibit the water resistance of higher priced acryUc resins (150). VAc, vinyl chloride—ethylene terpolymers have been developed which provide the exterior resistance properties of vinyl chloride with the dexibiUty of the ethylene for exterior paint vehicles (151). [Pg.471]

Reexamination of the surface after a brief acid cleaning showed that about 90% was still covered by resin, although the resin had been blistered and ruptured at small tubercular sites (Fig. 5.17). [Pg.115]

Figure 20-14 shows the protection of a gravel filter in the treatment of raw water. The 200-m internal surface was coated with 300 jlm of tar-pitch epoxy resin. Long-term experiments indicated that at = -0.83 V, no cathodic blisters were formed, but were formed at more negative potentials (see Section 5.2.1.4). TiPt anodes 400 and 1100 mm in length, 12 mm in diameter, and with an active surface of 0.11 m were installed [29]. [Pg.461]

Euran Furan resins are thermosetting polymers derived from furfuryl alcohol and Furfural. The cure must be carefully controlled to avoid the formation of blisters and delaminations. To obtain optimum strength and corrosion resistance, furan composites must undergo a postcure schedule at carefully selected temperatures depending upon the laminate thickness. Equipment made with furan resins exhibits excellent resistance to solvents and combinations of acids and solvents. These resins are not for use in strong oxidizing environments. [Pg.44]

The same analysis was performed using the identical screw design and an LDPE resin with a 25 dg/min (190 °C, 2.16 kg) Mi, as shown in Fig. 15.11(b). For this case, the specific rate was 5 to 20% less than that for the 2 Mi resin shown in Fig. 15.11(a). Moreover, the highest specific rate possible before resin flows into the vent was calculated at 63 kg/(h-rpm), a value that was about 10 % less than that for the 2 Ml resin. For the 25 Ml resin, the optimal clearance for the second blister is about 3.0 to 3.8 mm, providing the highest specific rate while not forcing resin to flow into the vent dome. [Pg.668]

One of the first attempts to produce polyurethane was from the reaction of an intermediate polyol of 1,3- and l,4-bis(hydroxyhexafluoroisopropyl)benzene m- and />-12F-diols) by reaction with epichlorohydrin. This polyol was subsequently allowed to react with a commercial triisocyanate, resulting in a tough, cross-linked polyurethane (129,135,139). ASTM and military specification tests on these polyurethanes for weather resistance, corrosion prevention, blister resistance, and ease of cleaning showed them to compare quite favorably with standard resin formulations. [Pg.540]
