Telling detail research

More than just intuition tells us how important materials are. In 1989 the National Research Council (NRC) prepared a report, Materials Science and Engineering for the 1990s (7) that examined in detail the impact of materials science on our national competitiveness. The NRC study surveyed eight major industries that together employed 7 million people in 1987 and had sales of more than 1.4 trillion. Additional millions of jobs in ancillary industries depend on the materials industry. Despite the very different needs for particular materials, the NRC survey also showed a remarkable consistency in generic and technological needs. Every industry surveyed expressed a clear need to produce new and traditional materials more economically and with a higher reproducibility and quality than is currently possible. 

All this is basic chemical research that has wide importance, determining the molecular structure of a component of living cells. Simply, it tells us the details of how proteins are now made, but more generally it strengthens the picture of how life may have started in a world where RNA was both information molecule and catalyst. It is a major advance in scientific understanding. 

Shortly thereafter the same reporter published another page 1 article in the New York Times stating that more radioactive cesium was released from the Chernobyl accident than from all bomb tests combined. I sent him the detailed evidence that he was wrong by an order of magnitude and chided him for misinforming the public. His response was, I don t tell you how to do research, so you don t tell me how to do journalism. It is obviously a very important career advancement step for a freelancer to get a page 1 article in the New York Times. 

One way in which researchers have addressed the question of linkage order is with the use of Walsh functions [6,7]. These are described in detail in Sect. 3 and summarised here. The Walsh functions form a basis for functions over / 0,1 R. Any such function can be decomposed into a weighted sum of Walsh functions. The Walsh functions that contribute to the weighted sum are of differing orders, defined by the number of bits they contain that are set to 1. The process of performing a Walsh decomposition of a function produces the weights (known as the Walsh coefficients) associated with each Walsh function and many have values of zero. Consequently, the order of the functions with non-zero coefficients tells us about the order of interactions in the function. 

The broadly historical account above of the development of the SOCRATES system has been necessarily simphfied to aid the telling of the story. A number of pubhcations are now in preparation which describe in detail the more interesting and novel parts of the system. This account has aimed to illustrate how SOCRATES evolved from earUer systems at Sandwich, and how a judicious mixture of acquired software and in-house development has led to a particularly flexible, highly integrated research data management system. 

A traditional anthropological method is ethnographic in nature and may include long-term participant observation and the collection of detailed oral histories and life stories by telling their own stories to the researcher, refiigees themselves and the ethnographer her or himself are able to develop a narrative analysis to interpret the reasons for their displacement. Eastmond (2007) finds that narratives can help researchers uncover the causes of displacement by listening to the voices of the displaced ...
