Some birds also consume vegetables. Do not permit any seed to remain visible on the surface of the ground when planting vegetables. It may also be necessary occasionally to make use of netting or spun-bonded row covers to protect vegetables from birds. Imitation snakes, owls and hawks repel birds only if they are moved frequently from place to place and then only for a short time. Plastic foam cups inverted over com ears after pollination may protect ripe com ears from blackbirds. 

USE As catalyst for organic reactions as stabilizer for acetylated polyformaldehyde in anticaries compositions in seed treatments to repel birds and rodents. 

Plastic application materials such as cables are destroyed by animals and especially by rodents. Therefore, additives may be incorporated to eliminate potential damage to these materials. Additives of choice to repel rodents are substances with a bitter taste, for example, denatonium benzoate, with a spicy taste (capsaicin, hot pepper), and/or with an unpleasant odor for animals (Fig. 11.25). Other substances repel birds, for example, natural oils or methyl salicylate [69]. 

It has been used as a bird repellant and is the parent compound of the anthraquinone vat dyes in which the dyeing is carried out by immersion in the reduced vat solution followed by air oxidation to the original insoluble compound.
