Repacking

Packed-type joints are significant for their large-movement capacities and mggedness in body constmction. When properly adapted into a piping system, their performance is satisfactory in both moderate and severe services. However, as with any packed element subject to motion, joints of this type require occasional tightening and repacking. 

Repacking the pump is a difficult and dirty job and falls down to the bottom of the mechanics favorite to do list. Extreme eare should be taken to assure a proper installation. It s a job usually put off until the very last moment. Repaeking a pump eorrectly takes a lot of time. Not following the correct repacking and start-up procedures results in short packing life.

A third parameter to consider is the column construction. Thus the sample applicator should provide optimal sample application to give the most performance possible out of the packed bed. Constructions should also allow simple, fast, and reproducible packing of the column. Because costs for repacking of columns are a substantial operating cost item in industrial chromatography, the selection of column construction from this point of view is also important. Some novel column constructions allow very simple procedures both for laboratory and for industrial scale (e.g., INdEX columns, see Section V). 

II. AMERICAN POLYMER GEL-PERMEATION/SIZE EXCLUSION CHROMATOGRAPHY (GPC/SEC) COLUMN REPACKING... 

Many researchers choose to buy expensive GPC/SEC columns from one of the major producers because that producer s columns had been used in the past or because of a successful marketing campaign by one particular producer. It should be noted that repacked columns can be obtained for a fraction of the cost of new columns. American Polymer Standards repacked columns are guaranteed to perform just as well as new columns from any company. When a column is repacked the only parts reused are the stainless-steel tube and end caps. This hardware is then repacked using new frits and new ST-DVB gel. Each column is individually tested in a quality control laboratory and shipped in the customer s choice of solvent. American Polymer Standards offers a column repacking service because it is a practical, inexpensive way for customers to acquire state of the art GPC/SEC columns. 

The point to consider with repacked GPC/SEC columns is the warranty. Because the columns are fragile, warranties are very important. American Polymer Standards offers a 90-day unconditional warranty on every repacked column. This type of warranty is especially useful for beginners, who would typically make mistakes within the first 3 months of GPC/SEC work. 

One question of chief interest concerns the number of runs that can be run with one individual SEC column. The lifetime of the sorbent itself must be tested as well as the maximum run number for the packed column. Because column packing procedures for SEC columns are rather time-consuming and all SEC columns have to be checked very carefully with respect to performance, very frequent repacking of the column is unreasonable. Therefore, CIP protocols are generally necessary. The CIP protocol should be developed as part of the process validation program. 

Perform appropriate column hygiene steps use cleaning in place protocols if necessary, repack the column... 

Repacking a tower will usually show a variation in pressure drop. For small 8-in. dia. units the variation may be as much as 100%. In larger columns 24-in. dia. and up, this variation is noticed, but only to about 50% or less. 

This procedure provides detailed instructions on how to repack centrifugal pump packed stuffing boxes or glands. The methodology described here is applicable to other gland sealed units such as valves and reciprocating machinery.

Another common practice in hospitals is the repackaging of products purchased in bulk into smaller containers. Increased handling ofthe product inevitably increases the risk of contamination, as shown by one survey when hospital-repacked items were found to be contaminated twice as often as those in the original pack (Public Health Laboratory Service Report 1971).

These increases in efficiency pose a threat to the workers in the industry. As a result, they may strike, and the final settlement may result in a nullification of many economic benefits. This happened when the railroads converted from steam locomotives to diesels. At that time the union forced the management to keep a fireman on every train whether he was needed or not. Similarly, the settlement of a recent East Coast dock strike provided a setback to the use of containerized units. It stated that all containerized units that entered New York ports could be unpacked and repacked at the union s request and the shipper s expense, if the final destination was less than 50 miles from the dock, or if the container had more than one product within it.8... 

For use with 25 cm x 4.6 mm analytical columns, guard columns and scavenger columns are often 4.6 mm internal diameter and 3-10 cm in length. They can be packed with microparticulate stationary phases or with porous layer beads. Porous layer beads are cheaper than microparticulates and are easier to pack, but they have lower capacities and will require changing more often. It is usually difficult to know how long a pre-column will last before it requires changing. In routine work, precolumns are usually repacked or replaced to a fixed schedule. 

The Pharmaceutical companies want to maximise there profit on drugs. To do this there might be price differences between markets and countries. In this case another pharmaceutical company can buy the drug in one country and sell it in another. Despite the costs for re-labelling and repacking there might be a profit for the parallel importing company. An example is shown in Table 8.1.
