Reovirus genome

Double-stranded RNA is unusual in nature but constitutes the genome of the reoviruses.516 The RNA of these viruses fragments into segments upon infection. One member of the group is thought to be the cause of acute diarrhea of infants.517... [Pg.248]

Reoviruses are nonenveloped virions with icosahedral symmetry and consist of two concentric protein shells, termed the outer capsid and core [15]. These virions encapsidate a genome of 10 double-stranded RNA gene segments. Reovirus strain type 1 Lang (TIL) has a diameter of 850 A and 600 projections composed of the uS protein [147]. uS interdigitates with a more internal layer composed of 600 copies of fil protein to form the outer capsid. At each icosahedral 5-fold axis, pentamers of 2.2 protein... [Pg.435]

Because reovirus contains a segmented genome, differences in disease pathogenesis exhibited by different reovirus strains can be mapped to... [Pg.456]

The mammalian reoviruses are divided into three serotypes (1, 2, and 3) on the basis of hemagglutination inhibition and antibody neutralization tests (Rosen, 1960). Reovirions contain a segmented, double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) genome surrounded by two concentric icosahedral protein shells (Gomatos et ai, 1962). There is an internal core containing the genome and a closely applied inner capsid surrounded by an outer capsid shell (Smith et ai, 1969 Fig. 1). [Pg.432]
