Relief Concepts

Pressure relief systems are required for the following reasons 1

The pressure within the reactor increases because of increased vapor pressure of the liquid components and/or gaseous decomposition products resulting from the high temperature. 

Curve A is for vapor or gas discharged through the relief valve. The pressure drops immediately when the relief device opens because only a small amount of vapor discharge is required to decrease the pressure. The pressure drops until the relief valve closes this pressure difference is called the blowdown.

It is intended that this review should be read in conjunction with the previous article by Tipson,1 and for this reason, older work is, for the most part, either omitted or only briefly mentioned. In some cases, however, recapitulation has been necessary in order to throw into relief the essential features of new concepts. 

LOPA is a semi-quantitative tool for analyzing and assessing risk. This method includes simplified methods to characterize the consequences and estimate the frequencies. Various layers of protection are added to a process, for example, to lower the frequency of the undesired consequences. This concept of layers of protection is illustrated in Figure 11-16. The combined effects of the protection layers and the consequences are then compared against some risk tolerance criteria. 

The simplest form of qualitative data is binary data in which there are only two possible values, for example, death/survival or success/failure each of which needs to be defined within a specified time interval has pain relief been achieved within two hours of treatment, success - or not, failure.
