Relief Concepts

Pressure relief systems are required for the following reasons 1 [Pg.354]

1 Marx Isaacs, Pressure Relief Systems, Chemical Engineering (Feb. 22,1971), pp. 113-124. [Pg.354]

The pressure within the reactor increases because of increased vapor pressure of the liquid components and/or gaseous decomposition products resulting from the high temperature. [Pg.355]

Curve A is for vapor or gas discharged through the relief valve. The pressure drops immediately when the relief device opens because only a small amount of vapor discharge is required to decrease the pressure. The pressure drops until the relief valve closes this pressure difference is called the blowdown. [Pg.356]

B ecause the relief character of two-phase vapor-liquid material is markedly different from vapor relief, the nature of the relieved material must be known in order to design a proper relief. [Pg.356]

The crack-relief concept requires three layers. The first is the crack-relief layer, followed by a well-graded intermediate levelling or binder course and then a dense-graded surface course. The binder course is a typical 18 mm mixture placed to a thickness of 50 mm and the... [Pg.696]

The alternate concept which has been in use for many years is to fabricate or purchase a Tee connection upon w hich the two safety relief valves can be mounted on top of their full-port plug or gate valve with required locking lugs. [Pg.431]

It is intended that this review should be read in conjunction with the previous article by Tipson,1 and for this reason, older work is, for the most part, either omitted or only briefly mentioned. In some cases, however, recapitulation has been necessary in order to throw into relief the essential features of new concepts. [Pg.286]

LOPA is a semi-quantitative tool for analyzing and assessing risk. This method includes simplified methods to characterize the consequences and estimate the frequencies. Various layers of protection are added to a process, for example, to lower the frequency of the undesired consequences. The protection layers may include inherently safer concepts the basic process control system safety instrumented functions passive devices, such as dikes or blast walls active devices, such as relief valves and human intervention. This concept of layers of protection is illustrated in Figure 11-16. The combined effects of the protection layers and the consequences are then compared against some risk tolerance criteria. [Pg.500]

The simplest form of qualitative data is binary data in which there are only two possible values, for example, death/survival or success/failure each of which needs to be defined within a specified time interval has pain relief been achieved within two hours of treatment, success - or not, failure. This form of data is extremely common in medical research and yet it ignores the possibility of gradation, success may not be total but only partial and yet not be total failure. These considerations lead naturally to the concept of ordered categorical or ordinal data. [Pg.277]

All the drugs used for migraine headache are aimed at symptom relief and not against the yet unrecognized cause. Two observations are however most striking first the impact on the concept of pain (for example see analgesics in the chapter on the treatment of pain) and secondly the fact that the pathophysiological principles are poorly defined. [Pg.698]

She reappeared, looking back at him from her fat flat suspicious face, and Kevin understood the reason why she had disappeared for a moment. It was because the concept of a side view didn t exist in a world where everything was perfectly flat. This is Polaroidsville, he thought with a relief which was strangely mingled with horror. [Pg.112]

Such a reader might find relief in differential geometry, the mathematical study of multiple coordinate systems. There are many excellent standard texts, such as Isham s book [I] for a gentle introduction to some basic concepts of differential geometry, try [Si]. A text that discusses covariant and contravariant tensors is Spivak s introduction to differential geometry [Sp, Volume I, Chapter 4]. For a quick introduction aimed at physical calculations, try Joshi s book [Jos]. [Pg.64]

In Text written in orange is me, Salty the Kracker. 1 will remind you what is and is not an j absolute must for MCAT. I will help you develop your MCAT intuition. In addition, I will offer mnemonics, simple methods of viewing a complex concept, and occasionally some comic relief. Don t ignore me, even if you think I am not funny, because my comedy is designed to help you understand and remember, tf you think 1 am funny, tell the boss. I could use a raise. [Pg.162]

Consistent with these hypotheses is the finding that continuous infusion of the opioid into the epidural or intrathecal space provides optimal pain relief postoper-atively or in chronic, intractable pain.2 40 83 Continuous infusion is associated with certain side effects, especially nausea and constipation, as well as the potential for disruption of the drug delivery system.24 57 77 Problems with tolerance have also been reported during continuous administration,27 but it is somewhat controversial whether tolerance really develops when these drugs are used appropriately in the clinical management of pain (see section on Concepts of Addiction, Tolerance, and Physical Dependence ). Hence, the benefit-to-risk ratio for continuous epidural or intrathecal infusion is often acceptable in patients with severe pain. This method of opioid administration continues to gain acceptance.24 57... [Pg.191]

If this seems at first to be a difficult concept at least someone else apparently saw it and I can always shed monastic inclinations for a moment of comic relief. Bertrand Russell s book Why I am not a Christian inspired me to write a short paper with the title Why I Am Not a Darwinian for The Scientist. Here is a ditty produced by a referee at the sight of my remarks I don t see anything unconventional or novel in the submitted assay. It is a standard presentation in a standard form of a perspective that is no secret . Many of my readers may remember the three stages of discovery attributed to Pasteur according to which nobody believes it at first, then everybody knew it all along (see above) and finally reassignment of credit. [Pg.64]
