During the 1950s, Professor W. F. Libby (1908-1980) of the University of Chicago and others worked out a method for determining the age of organic material It is based on the decay rate of carbon-14. The method can be applied to objects from a few hundred up to 50,000 years old. It has been used to determine the authenticity of canvases of Renaissance painters and to check the ages of relics left by prehistoric cave dwellers.

In summary, the capacity to synthesize both hemoproteins and iron sulfur proteins appears to be a ubiquitous attribute in organisms attacking reduced inorganic substrates. If the reactions by which these cells obtain energy represent relics of ancient forms of metabolism, it can only be concluded that heme formation and iron-sulfur coordination must have been invented at a very early stage in evolution. 

Many more studies have been initiated in attempts to explain the discrepancy between the belief of millions of people and the evidence provided by the radiocarbon dating technique on the age of the shrouds s cloth. Such studies, however, have resulted only in still further studies and a persistent controversy on the real nature of the relic.

Occasionally alternative expressions of the PDT (9.5) have been proposed [23-25], These alternatives arise from consideration of statistical thermodynamic manipulations associated with a particular ensemble, and the distinguishing features of those alternative formulae are relics of the particular ensemble considered. Some organisms, notably parasites, have organelles , which appear to be relics of chloroplasts but have no photosynthetic capacity. They are called apicoplasts but are probably not the origin of chloroplasts. Also note that a feature of symbiosis is that genes that are no longer required can be selectively lost as was probably the case in the example of loss from bacteria on becoming mitochondria (mentioned above).

Space limitations prevent my presenting a full-fledged review of the history of the observational programs along with the evolution of the comparisons between theory and data. For some recent reviews of mine, see [1] and further references therein. Instead, an overview is presented which highlights the challenges to SBBN. The remainder of this article is devoted to some of the key issues associated with each of the light nuclide relic abundances.
