Action. This technical term is a historic relic of the 17th century, before energy and momentum were understood. In modern terminology, action has the dimensions of energyxtime. Planck s constant has those dimensions, and is therefore sometimes called Planck s quantum of action. Pairs of measurable quantities whose product has dimensions of energyxtime are called conjugate quantities in quantum mechanics, and have a special relation to each other, expressed... [Pg.152]

The keywords line is another historical relic that is, in many cases, unfortunately misused. Adding keywords to an entry is often not very useful because over the years so many authors have selected words not on a list of controlled vocabulary and not uniformly applied to the whole database. NCBl, therefore, discourages the use of keywords but will include them on request, especially if the words are not present elsewhere in the record or are used in a controlled fashion (e.g., for EST, STS, GSS, and HTG records). At this time, the resistance to adding keywords is a matter of policy at NCBI/GenBank only. [Pg.53]

Their policies range from the permissive (all law-abiding adults) to the highly restrictive (must show a definite need), cop-killer bullet Term for armor-piercing ammunition popularized by gun control advocates. The term gets its name on the basis that it especially endangers police wearing bullet-proof vests, curios and relics Firearms that are at least 50 years old or that are considered (because of their scarcity, historical value, or unusual nature) to be collector s items. A federal firearms license (FFL) is required for interstate purchase of such firearms. [Pg.125]

When Mendel eff announced the Periodic Table of the Elements, he frankly stated, It has been evolved independently of any conception as to the nature of the elements. It does not in the least originate in the idea of a unique matter and it has no historical connection with that relic of the torments of classical thought/ He was alluding to the ancient idea of the unity of all matter. Plato had said Matter is one." Sporadically, this idea of a primordial substance from which everything else originated had been enunciated by philosophers and pseudo-scientists. The world paid little attention to their abstract conclusions. [Pg.197]

Above Flamel s tombstone, one of the few indisputable relics left of his historical reality. The upper portion shows carved representations of Christ, Saint Peter, and Saint Paul, and between them the symbols of gold (or the sun) and silver (or the moon), hut the inscription makes no mention of his alchemical achievements. Below the church of Saint acques -la-Boucherie where Flamel was huried. The church was demolished in the late ISth century, with only the tower, now used as a meteorological station, remaining. [Pg.46]

Several historical documents list the land owned by the Girls Reform School as 185 acres, and that includes the area where the burial pit is located. The relic hunter stated to the ERA and the author that he found an anomaly approximately 10 ft by 10 ft. He further stated that the anomaly was comprised of individual shells but that they were so dense as to make it impossible to separate out the individual shells even with a VHF detector with an average search coil. [Pg.168]

The introduction of an external magnetic field provides the most convenient reference axis for trii. The values of nil are determined by the / quantum number. For each value of I there are (21 + 1) values of m/. For historical reasons the 0,1, 2, and 3 values of the / quantum number are designated by the letters s, p, d, and f, respectively. (This choice is a relic of early spectroscopic studies when certain spectral series were designated sharp, principal, diffuse, or fundamental. )... [Pg.38]

A convention that is based on historical practice is reporting dissolved silica concentrations as mg SiOj/L or as ppm SiOj rather than in terms of Si or H4Si04- This convention appears to be a relic from the time when the concentration of elements in minerals was reported in terms of oxide components, i.e. weight percent oxides. [Pg.16]
