For Ca Mg -" no regional trend can be observed. At our study site only three lakes out of 20 show a significant increasing trend. The median rate is low 0.08 peq 1 yr. The absence of a significant base cation trend in most lakes may be explained by the fact that base cations are controlled by both concentration increasing and decreasing mechanisms.

Stratigraphic Distribution and Regional Trends. Major and trace element determinations were performed and are presented as weight percent or ppm of the 500°C ash fraction of the samples. This was done to eliminate the effect of variation in organic content and to facilitate comparisons. 

Data are taken from the EU Phare national reports on drugs 1998 and 1999 and can only be considered a summary of general regional trends. No data are available for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

It seems central to the on-going debates, both scientific and political, that the local and regional trend of important chemical ions in precipitation be determined in order that their contribution to the chemical cycle of local ecosystems can be more accurately assessed. Equally important to such an assessment is the quantification of the magnitude of the wet and dry deposition from the atmosphere and their ultimate disposition in the identified cycles.
