DME hydration occurs over acid catalysts, whereas the methanol steam reforming reaction proceeds over metal catalysts. Consequently, DME steam reforming requires a multi-component catalyst. Pre-Keformer A pre-reformer is based on the concept of shifting reforming duty away from the direct-fired reformer, thereby reducing the duty of the latter. The pre-reformer usually occurs at about 500°C inlet over an adiabatic fixed bed of special reforming catalyst, such as sulfated nickel, and uses heat recovered from the convection section of the reformer. After the cmde BTX is formed, by reforming in this case, a heart cut is sent to extraction. Actually, the xylenes and heavier components are often sent to downstream processes without extraction. The toluene produced is converted to ben2ene, a more valuable petrochemical, by mnning it through a hydrodealkylation unit. This catalytic unit operates at 540—810°C with an excess of hydrogen. A few industrial catalysts have simple compositions, but the typical catalyst is a complex composite made up of several components, illustrated schematically in Figure 9 by a catalyst for ethylene oxidation. Often it consists largely of a porous support or carrier, with the catalyticaHy active components dispersed on the support surface. For example, petroleum refining catalysts used for reforming of naphtha have about 1 wt% Pt and Re on the surface of a transition alumina such as y-Al203 that has a surface area of several hundred square meters per gram. The expensive metal is dispersed as minute particles or clusters so that a large fraction of the atoms are exposed at the surface and accessible to reactants (see Catalysts, supported). [Pg.170]
