Reflex testing

A single test will be used to determine acceptance or rejection of a test material. Once an activity criterion (such as an X score in a righting reflex test) is established, compounds are evaluated based on being less than X (i.e., negative) or equal to or greater than X (i.e., positive). As more data are accumulated, the criterion should be...

Rats, placed in individual macrolon cages (25 x 19 x 13 cm), are injected with barbital sodium (150 mg/kg i.p.). The latency to sleep and the duration of sleep (maximum 6 hours after barbital injection) are then recorded. Sleep is indicated by loss of the righting reflex. To avoid disturbing the experiment, no righting reflex test is performed before 50 minutes has elapsed after barbital injection (i.e. minimum sleep latency = 50 minutes). 

From a series of 1,7-annelated indole derivatives, cilansetron [(-)-162j was selected for further pharmacologicalprofilingboth in vitro and in vivo (Table 14.14) (454). In the RVN and Gpl, cilansetron [pA, 9.94 (RVN) 7.80 (Gpl)] is about 10-fold more potent than ondansetron [pA, 8.99 (RVN) 6.80 (Gpl)]. In the von Bezold-Jarisch reflex test (BJR) in unrestrained conscious rats, cilansetron (ED = 26 jLLg/kg, p.o.) is orally active at a dose 6 times lower than that of ondansetron (ED =165 ptg/kg, p.o.). Solvay announced Phase III studies for cilansetron for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, in July 2001 (455).

The LIS downloads specimen information to instruments and the LAS, monitors and provides to users all information related to specimen tracking received from the LAS, and receives all completed laboratory test results from each analyzer. Software with user-definable algorithms for automatic reflex testing may reside in either the LAS or the LIS depending on system capabilities and the overall design.

Gentamycin, for example, damages the hair cells in the cochlear, a measure of the toxicity which can be detected by scanning electron microscopy. There is a clear dose-response relationship between the number of cells destroyed and the increasing dose of gentamycin. The ototoxicity can also be detected in the intact animal by the Preyer reflex test which determines the threshold sound level for particular frequencies which an animal responds to by movement of the external ear. 

The toxicity of gentamycin to the ear may be detected by histopathology or more easily by the Preyer reflex test which measures hearing thresholds for particular sound frequencies. 

Each regulatory study design, protocol, or plan dehnes the tests required, and any additional tests must he approved hy formal approved amendments to the study plan or protocol. With some analyzers, it is possible to select reflex testing, which automatically initiates follow-up testing when certain test results are obtained on the first analysis requests. The use of reflex tests is best avoided, but if they are used, the reasons should be well documented. 

Valsalva s manoeuvre. Tests for the sympathetic nerves system involve blood pressure response to standing and the Quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test (QSART) [11]. Abnormal test results are associated with premature cardiovascular disease and death in diabetic patients.

GENERAL MOTOR ACTIVITY AND COMPLEX REFLEX TESTS... 

The patellar tendon reflex tests were carried out in the Motion Analysis Laboratory under the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. All tests were recorded and processed using the motion analysis system named Vicon Nexus 1.4.
