Above the water table, groundwater can also occur in perched aquifer conditions. In these instances, groundwater occurs in relatively permeable soil that is suspended over a relatively low permeability layer of limited lateral extent and thickness at some elevation above the water table. Perched groundwater occurrences are common within the vadose zone high-permeability zones overlie low-permeability zones of limited lateral extent in unconsolidated deposits. However, perched conditions can also occur within low-permeability units overlying zones of higher permeability in both unconsolidated and consolidated deposits. In the latter case, for example, a siltstone or clay stone overlies jointed and fractured bedrock such that groundwater presence reflects the inability of the water to drain at a rate that exceeds replenishment from above. 

After a product has been authorised, the regulatory system operates to keep the quality, safety and efficacy of that product under review and to control the way in which it is manufactured, marketed and distributed. The pharmaceutical legislation in Europe has recently been consolidated and, pursuant to Commission consultation and review, amended. The majority of the amendments are due to come into effect in November 2005. What follows, reflects the state of legislation as at close of 2004. 

The management literature is full of exhortations about the importance of managers having freedom to learn from their mistakes. Learning from the experience of an achievement is an equally satisfactory - and much more gratifying - way of learning and developing. A failure may precipitate much salutary reflection. But development eventually needs to be consolidated by success.

The details of the purchase described in this news story reflect a trend toward consolidation in the drug industry. Companies hope that by increasing in size they can better manage downturns in the economy while continuing to produce new drugs. 

In the last four years, the rate of publication of in-depth research into specialized aspects of the oil sands has increased significantly. This reflects the progression of research from the entrepreneurial to the consolidation stage. An excellent review of the literature has been prepared by Kamp in the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology (I). 

In a second phase, alternative sites to locate the consolidated site were evaluated. Four sites were considered with one of the alternatives involving a co-location at an existing site and the others requiring the construction of a new site. To reflect the nature of the decision problem the objective hierarchy described above was modified to include the net present value of the alternatives in addition to the qualitative criteria. On this basis trade-offs between qualitative and quantitative objectives were analyzed. In the case example it turned out that co-locating the plant at the existing site is both the most attractive option financially (mainly because no property rent or acquisition was required) and from a qualitative perspective (mainly due to proximity of the existing site to major customers). It should be noted that no major utilities infrastructure was required for the value chain considered and hence constructing a new site could not be ruled out up front for financial reasons. 

In order to avoid excessive expansion of the text, the material on enzymology and enzyme kinetics has been refocused and consolidated, reflecting changes that have taken place in the teaching of these areas in most institutions.
