Reference-unit value, qualitative

In connection with the apphcation of the gradient detector, another qualitative index, the so-called potential unit value (PU value), was suggested . This index is defined by means of the step heights of the two reference substances, the leading (hL) and the terminating (h. ) zones. 

A prospective location may appear to be right in all other respects but fails because of the manpower resource. This refers to not only the economic aspects such as the availability of labor and skills but also to the qualitative ones of being able to understand the local culture and customs, appreciation of people s attitudes and values. It also refers to the confidence in the ability to blend these with the culture and aspirations of the company to form a cohesive production unit that will work. A successful processing concept in one cultural environment may not be a success in another. 

In this reaction an anionic leaving group is replaced by a neutral donor molecule. Consequently, if relative EPD strengths of both neutral and anionic EPD units are known, it should be possible to make at least qualitative predictions about the ionizability of substrates A—Bj, A—Bg,. .. in various EPD solvents. Approximate values of relative EPD strength of halide, pseudohalide, and neutral EPD units have been determined using vanadyl(IV)acetylacetonate, VO(acac)2, as reference EPA (46) and are listed in Table VII. These values have proved useful for the interpretation of numerous reactions involving complex formation between transition metal ions and halide or pseudohalide ions... 

The coded units are obtained by selecting for each factor a value that constitutes a center of interest or a reference value, and then selecting certain values that are below and above that center of interest by an equivalent amount. This is a straightforward process for quantitative factors but may not be possible for some qualitative factors that can exist at only two levels.
