Institutions such as The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) have been established to acquire, preserve, authenticate and distribute reference cell lines and microorganisms for use by the academic and industrial, scientific community (Hay etal., 1992). The Cell Culture Department of The ATCC performs these functions to include human and animal cell lines with over 3200 available in 1993. [Pg.459]

Blood flowing from the intestines to the liver through the hepatic portal vein often contains bacteria. Filtration of this blood is a protective function provided by the liver. Large phagocytic macrophages, referred to as Kupffer cells, line the hepatic venous sinuses. As the blood flows through these sinuses, bacteria are rapidly taken up and digested by the Kupffer cells. This system is very efficient and removes more than 99% of the bacteria from the hepatic portal blood. [Pg.295]

The main reasons for the popularity of the Caco-2 cell line are that the cells are easy to maintain in culture, and they develop unusually high degree of differentiation spontaneously under standard culture conditions. In fact, Caco-2 is the only human intestinal cell line that has been found so far spontaneously to undergo functional enterocytic differentiation. The cells exhibit a good reproducibility, robustness and functional properties of human intestinal epithelial cells. The model has proved capable of predicting the oral absorption of a variety of drug compounds [see references in 10]. [Pg.95]
