Polypropylene recycled

Eew of the products in which polypropylene are used can be recovered in commercial quaUties. An exception is battery casings. In 1994, U.S. capacity for recycling polypropylene from battery casings was 265 million pounds aimuaHy (45). About 75% of the recovered polypropylene is used in new battery cases which have a recycled PP content of about 50%. Total polypropylene recycling capacity was 350 million pounds aimuaHy for an operating rate estimated at 71—90% (45). [Pg.233]

Recycling of unwanted polymers is the best solution, and six types of plastics in common use are frequently stamped with identifying codes assigned by the Society of the Plastics Industry (Table 31.2). After sorting by type, the items to be recycled are shredded into small chips, washed, dried, and melted for reuse. Soft-drink bottles, for instance, are made from recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate), trash bags are made from recycled low-density polyethylene, and garden furniture is made from recycled polypropylene and mixed plastics. Though the overall impact result of the hemp/epoxy composite was lower than the impact of the glass/epoxy composite, the impact associated with the matrix was very high. There are two ways to reduce the impacts associated with the matrix one is using bio-based matrix, the other is using a recycled matrix.
