Recycle unsaturated polymer concrete

Polymer concretes show excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance compared with conventional cement concretes. Polymer concretes can be cured quickly by the use of curing agents. Thus, the applications of polymer concretes are being increased. One of the popular polymers for polymer concretes is unsaturated polyester (UPE) resin. The properties of UPE resin can be modified by changing its molecular features. For the synthesis of the resin, phthalic anhydride or isophthalic acid as well as maleic anhydride can be employed to modify the mechanical properties or hydrothermal resistance. Terephthalic acid which is also used for the synthesis of poly ethylene terephthalate (PET) enhances the thermal resistance of the cured UPE resin. However, the synthesis of unsaturated polyester resin from terephthalic acid is difficult. One method to synthesize unsaturated polyester from terephthalic acid is the use of recycled PET. [Pg.2]

PET is useful polymer used for fiber, film, and plastic containers such as carbonated beverage bottles. Recently, the recycling of polymers such as PET after use is attracting the attention of many researchers aware of environmental problems and wishing to find ways to save earth resources. Previous studies showed that unsaturated polyester resins can be economically prepared from recycled PET and the resins may be useful for resin concretes (1 4). However, there is little information on the molecular features of the UPE resins. Thus, we synthesized various UPE resins from PET. Especially, the PET content, chain flexibility and degree of unsaturation of the resins were systematically varied and the effects of those variables on the mechanical properties of the cured resins and polymer mortars made therefrom were studied. [Pg.2]

The high cost of resins used in the production of polymer concrete (PC) makes the material expensive relative to cement-based materials. Not surprisingly, a recent survey ranked lower cost resins as the most important future need for PC [1], Recently, some work has been done on the production of unsaturated polyester resins based on recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate), PET [2], The PET wastes are typically found in used beverage bottles, and many states have passed legislation to collect and recycle these bottles. Other tertiary recycling processes that have been developed include a Freeman Chemical Corp. process to convert PET bottles and film to aromatic polyols used for manufacture of urethane and isocyanurates. Glycolized PET, preferably from film, since it is often lower in cost than bottles, can be reacted with unsaturated dibasic acids or anhydrides to form unsaturated polyesters. These can then be used in applications such as glass-fiber-reinforced bath tubs, shower stalls, and boat huUs. United States companies that have been involved include Ashland Chemical, Alpha Corp., Ruco Polymer Corp., and Plexmar. Unsaturated polyesters have also been used in polymer concrete, where the very fast cure times facilitate repair of concrete structures. Basing polymer concrete materials, for repair or precast applications, on recycled PET reportedly leads to 5 to 10 percent cost savings and comparable properties to polymer concrete based on virgin materials. However, they are still approximately 10 times the cost of portland cement concrete. There appears to be little commercial application of these processes at present. [Pg.520]

Use of the products of chemical recycling of PET in the production of new PET resin has already been mentioned. In addition, the products from chemical recycling can be used as a feedstock in manufacturing of unsaturated polyesters, often for glass fiber-reinforced applications such as bath tubs, shower stalls, and boat hulls.
