Rectal prolapse

Other complications may include gastroesophageal reflux, dysmotility, intussusception, volvulus, atresia, rectal prolapse, and complications related to corrective surgery for meconium ileus.6... 

Intestinal obstruction may be manifested as meconium ileus, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome, or intussusception on abdominal x-ray or computed tomography scan. Rectal prolapse may be noted on physical exam.

Rectal prolapse Sinking of the rectum through the anal sphincter so that it is visible externally. 

Signs and Symptoms Abdominal pain, cramps, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, tenesmus, and blood, pus, or mucus in stools. Infections also cause mucosal ulceration, rectal bleeding, drastic dehydration. Serious less frequent complications include sepsis, seizures, convulsions, rectal prolapse, toxic megacolon, intestinal perforation, renal failure, and hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Postoperative failure after Teflon sling repair of a rectal prolapse is probably due to poor technique (4).

Other complications may include lethargy, delirium, seizure, encephalopathy, hemolytic-uremic syndrome, septicemia, Reiter syndrome, hepatitis, rectal prolapse, myocarditis, and toxic mega colon. 

For rectal prolapse, add Radix Astragali Membranacei (Huang Qi) and Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma). 

Bowel obstruction may be present at birth due to meconium ileus. Older children might present with distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS), colonic stricture(s) and, less commonly, intussusception, fecal impaction of the appendix, gastroesophageal reflux or recurrent rectal prolapse (Fig. 5.24).

TVaditional use The aboveground parts are used as a demulcent, hemostatic and to heal wounds. A tincture is used to treat diarrhea and as a diuretic. A poultice is used to treat rectal prolapse and prolapsed hemorrhoids. The crashed, dry or fresh herb is applied as a compress to treat abscesses. In the Bryansk area of Russia a decoction of the roots is used to treat hepatitis. In the Tibetan medicine, the aboveground parts are used to treat swelling, ascites, and as a hemostatic (Plant Resources of the USSR 1987). 

Intussusceptions are mucosal or mural rectal wall invaginations which can be located anteriorly or posteriorly or can affect the ilole circumference. They present as a circumscribed thickening of the rectal mucosa and the vrall (Fig. 13.2a). A caudal movement of this rectal s iment into the anal canal marks the beginning of an internal rectal prolapse. But note that the differentiation between an intussusception and an internal rectal prolapse is not dearly determined and the two terms are often overlapping. A more prominent internal rectal prolapse is often seen as a V-shaped or double rectal wall on the midsagittal image (Fig. 13.6). The internal rectal prolapse may eventually protrude through the anal canal and then becomes an external rectal prolapse. 

Often an organ descent in/of the anterior or middle compartment typically leads to a compression of the ventral rectal wall. This finding can promote an internal rectal prolapse and might account for a stool entrapment and a stool outlet obstruction (Fig. 13.1c).

Intermittently prolapsing rectal mucosa appears as a low rectal mass, causing a smooth soft tissue defect. Sigmoidoscopy shows edematous mucosa due to rectal prolapse (Taylor 2003c) (Fig. 8.38).
