An ensemble of monkeys and one open door There is another way we can do the experiment with many, many monkeys (an ensemble of Man monkeys). We can send them all into the room at time zero, and count how many monkeys emerge from the f-door between the time T and (T + At). This is proportional to the rate of emergence, or the intensity of emergence. Now we only have to do the experiment once (we have many monkeys) but we record the number of monkeys emerging per At at many times T, and then plot our results. We now get an exponential that decays at the same rate as before (kf we call it the intensity of monkeys... 

When a chemist writes down a molecular formula, it normally represents an ensemble of many molecules. The new challenge is to handle single molecules or defined aggregates of a few molecules. One would then want to visualize these nanoobjects, to move them around in real space, to record physical functions such as light emission and their response to a stimulus, and even to perform chemical reactions on them.

In the words of Lancet and colleagues, a fundamentally different approach has envisaged primordial selfreplication as the collective property of ensembles of relatively simple molecules, interconnected by networks of mutually catalytic interactions. 38 The hereditary information in this case would be represented by the identity and concentration of its components. The term compositional genome has been used to describe this system, in which genetic information is not stored in a list, as in DNA, but is represented by the presence or absence of organic components.39,40 As an analogy, consider DNA to be the equivalent of a class list that records the full possible enrollment in a course. The information in a compositional genome would be represented by the presence of students who have turned up on a particular day.
