Recent Innovations in Mechanical Ventilatory Support

In the modern microprocessor age PPMV devices are constantly being upgraded through software enhancements. This has resulted in increasingly more responsive gas delivery systems with more sophisticated monitoring. Moreover, numerous feedback enhancements have been introduced on specific machines to automate ventilation (Table 3) (73). While conceptually appealing, none of these feedback systems have been shown to improve outcomes. Table 3 also lists other recent innovations to improve patient-ventilator synchrony. Clinical trials with clinically relevant endpoints are important to provide justification for the adoption of these innovations. [Pg.21]
