Recent Developments and Applications

It is worth recalling that the asymmetric cyclopropanation of styrene with ethyl diazoacetate, reported in 1966 by Noyori and co-workers, appears to be the first example of transition metal catalyzed enantioselective reaction in homogeneous phase. This reaction remains a landmark in asymmetric cyclopropanation. On a general standpoint, catalytic asymmetric cyclopropanation continues to attract much attention, due in part to the marked trends toward marketing more and more optically active molecules as the optically pure eutomer. This topic has been much studied in connection, inter alia, with the synthesis of valuable intermediates such as chrysanthemic acid derivatives and cilastatin. The subject has been recently reviewed [17]. [Pg.798]

Practical applications include the synthesis of rran5-2-phenylcyclopropanamine (trade name tranylcypromine), an antidepressant acting as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor [20 a], of 2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylate from isobutene [20 b], a key step in the commercial production of cilastatin, 3 (eq. (4)), and of esters of chrysanthemic acid 4 (using the methylene bis(diphenyloxazoline) 5) [ 17, 21 ] (eq. (5)). Cilastatin is a dehydropeptidase which acts as an in vivo stabilizer of the car-bapenem antibiotic imipenem with achiral diazoesters. [Pg.798]

Related insecticides include cypermethrin 7 (the corresponding dichloro derivative) and permethrin (where a-C is an unsubstituted CH2 group). Many other natural products containing the cyclopropyl group have been synthesized through related reactions of a carbenoid of copper or of rhodium with a carbon-carbon double bond see [11] for further examples. [Pg.800]

Chiral substituents at the N atoms of carboxamide anions of dirhodium(II) complexes are closer to the reaction center and, as expected, such catalysts usually [Pg.800]

The methyl esters of (/ )- or (5)-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid (acronym mepy) respectively form [Rh2(5/ -mepy)4] or [Rh2(55-mepy)4] complexes (see Structure 8). The catalyst is thus available in both configurations, 5R or 5S. Such catalysts deliver often more than 90% ee and conformational energy minima (extended Hiickel) of the carbene-styrene complex predict the observed enantiomer preference [24 a]. [Pg.801]

A number of books and journal articles reviewing computational methods relevant to biophysical problems have been published in the last decade. Two of the most popular texts, however, were published more than ten years ago those of McCammon and Harvey in 1987 and Brooks, Karplus, and Pettitt in 1988. There has been significant progress in theoretical and computational methodologies since the publication of these books. Therefore, we feel that there is a need for an updated, comprehensive text including the most recent developments and applications in the field. [Pg.519]

In this chapter, we describe some of the more widely used and successful kinetic techniques involving controlled hydrodynamics. We briefly discuss the nature of mass transport associated with each method, and assess the attributes and drawbacks. While the application of hydrodynamic methods to liquid liquid interfaces has largely involved the study of spontaneous processes, several of these methods can be used to investigate electrochemical processes at polarized ITIES we consider these applications when appropriate. We aim to provide an historical overview of the field, but since some of the older techniques have been reviewed extensively [2,3,13], we emphasize the most recent developments and applications. [Pg.333]

Raman microscopy has been used for analysis of very small samples or small heterogeneities in larger samples. Recent developments and applications of this technique have been reviewed by Turrell and Corset (1996), including a discussion of the coupling of Raman microscopy with electron, ion and x-ray microscopies, and these authors give a description of a number of prototype instruments with this facility. [Pg.53]
