Reading normal speed

Watch the speed limit. No matter which proofreading tech-nique(s) you use, slow down. Reading at your normal speed won t give you enough time to spot errors. 

As shown in Figure 23.11, two adjacent Braille cells were read by the subjects and the data for two types of recognition rates - Hit Recognition Rate (HRR) and Number Recognition Rate (NRR) - were obtained. HRR denotes the rate at which a subject recognizes movement of the Braille dots and NRR represents whether a subject reads the character correctly as the Braille dots are activated. In the experiments, the HRR and NRR of each subject have been tested when the actuating frequency of the Braille pins was at 15 Hz, which is the normal read out speed of Braille readers. The results of the tests are shown in Table 23.1. In the experiment, the HRR reaches up to about 80 % and the NRR shows a maximum of 41 %. The test results of 80 % for HRR and 40 % for NRR are much better than originally expected. 

To increase visual acuity with future implants, both technical and biological advances are needed. Simulations of artificial vision project that about 1,000 individual pixels are needed to allow visual function such as reading (at near normal speed) and face recognition. Most mass spectrometers for analytical work have access to a large library of mass spectra of known compounds. These libraries are in a form that can be read immediately by a computer viz., the data corresponding to each spectrum have been compressed into digital form and stored permanently in memory. Each spectrum is stored as a list of m/z values for all peaks that are at least 5% of the height of the largest peak. To speed the search process, a much shorter version of the spectrum is normally examined (e.g., only one peak in every fourteen mass units). 

Snap-in tabs, above each end of the output meter, indicate the direction the final control element moves for a change in the output signal. Tabs normally read "open-close" for control valves and "slow-fast" for variable-speed motors, or other appropriate designations. 

Try reading upside down for a page or two. Surprisingly, psychological experiments have found that many people can work up to almost normal reading speed within a page or two. After the initial work, automatization of the perceptual simulation/construction process can be surprisingly fast. 

Although most instruments offer cool plasma capability, there are subtle differences in the way it is implemented. It is therefore very important to evaluate the ease of setup and how easy it is to switch from cool to normal plasma conditions and back in an automated multielement run. Also, remember that there will be an equilibrium time in switching from normal to cool plasma conditions. Make sure you know what this is, because an equivalent read-delay will have to be built into the method, which could be an issue if speed of analysis is important to you. If in doubt, set up a test to determine the equilibrium time by carrying out a short stability run while switching back and forth between normal and cool plasma conditions.
