A few studies have been performed with event-related potentials (ERP) to examine the cognitive effects of THC. In subjects viewing emotionally valenced words (neutral, negative, or positive), THC produced a behavioral decrease in recognition rate (Leweke et al. 1998). The ERPs showed the typical difference between old and new words (enhanced positivity for old words beginning 250 milliseconds poststimulus), and THC enhanced the positivity in response to old words. This counterintuitive dissociation between ERPs and behavioral indices was interpreted as a reflection of implicit memory processes underlying the ERP effect.

Swain and Ballard worked with 2048 bins but also experimented with other histogram sizes. They tested histogram sizes from 64 (8 x 8 x 4) bins to 8125 (40 x 40 x 20) bins. Recognition rates improved for larger histograms. Histogram sizes of 512 bins and more resulted in a recognition rate of over 99.7 when tested on a database with 66 models.

Pattern recognition methods have been used successfully to classify sweet and nonsweet carbosulphamates102. For the fifty carbosulphamates studied the average recognition rate was 80-93% of the sweet and 67% of the non-sweet being correctly classified. In a second paper these authors using similar methods correctly classified 87% of acyclic compounds and 81% of the cyclic compounds studied103. 

The experimental results show that correct recognition rate is enhanced greatly by method developed in the paper, while the rate of false alarm rises lightly.

An obvious and easy to calculate optimization criterion is the recognition rate. Because only integer numbers of patterns are classified, the response surface is discontinuous and consists of a series of plateaus. It is possible for the simplex to become stranded on such a plateau. Another problem arises if a weight vector with 100 % recognition is found which does not necessarily occupy the optimum position between the clusters. Therefore, it is necessary to use a second optimization criterion to smooth the surface.
