Complex liquids are ubiquitous in materials manufacture. In some cases, they are formed and must be handled at intermediate steps in the manufacture of materials (e.g., sols and gels in the making of ceranucs, mixtures of monomer and polymer in reactive processing of polymers). In other cases (e.g., composite liquids), they are the actual products. Understanding the properties of complex fluids and the imphcations of fluid properties for the design of materials processes or end uses presents a formidable intellectual challenge.

Reactive processing of polymers is based on the use of low-melting-point solid or liquid raw materials or premixes to form articles of the required by the usual polymerization process shape simultaneous transformation into linear, branched or network polymers and/or solidification at moderate temperatures (as a rule, up to 200°C) and pressure.

Although this book is intended to address the chemorheology and reactive processing of polymers, the chemical reactions in the melt phase (e.g. branching reactions, degradation) may affect the subsequent solid-state and performance properties of the polymer. Furthermore, the end product of the reactive processing is the solid polymer and the transformation process from the liquid to the solid state of a polymer is fundamental to the success of the processing operation. It is therefore important to examine the way the polymer achieves its solid-state properties, and one of the most important properties...
