A caustic burn (chemical burn) is an acute, severe irritant reaction by which the cells have been damaged to a point where there is no return to viability in other words, a necrosis develops (Stewart 1985 Sykes et al. 1986 Cartotto et al. 1996). One single skin exposure to certain chemicals can result in a chemical burn. These chemicals react with intra- and intercellular components in the skin. However, the action of toxic (irritant) chemicals varies, causing partly different irritant reactions morphologically. They can damage the horny layer, cell membranes, lysosomes, mast cells, leukocytes, DNA synthesis, blood vessels, enzyme systems,... 

Mobility of the reactants and reaction products of the oxidative kinetic chain reaction, of stabilisers and of the polymer molecules themselves affects the kinetics of the radical reactions. Morphology of a polymer material and its physical state, e g. stress, strain and orientation, has an effect on the mobility and therefore on the process of oxidative degradation. Fibres or slit films of polyethylene or pol ropylene are cold-drawn in the production. The orientation of the cold-drawn polymer material produced here has a particularly strong repercussion on oxidation stability.
