The addition of the sulphuric acid first neutralises the sodium hydroxide, and then gives a weakly acidic and therefore colourless solution. The sodium derivative (A) then undergoes further partial hydrolysis in order to re-establish the original equilibrium, and the sodium hydroxide thus formed again produces the pink coloration, which increases in depth as the hydrolysis proceeds. [Pg.134]

Another aspect of wave function instability concerns symmetry breaking, i.e. the wave function has a lower symmetry than the nuclear framework. It occurs for example for the allyl radical with an ROHF type wave function. The nuclear geometry has C21, symmetry, but the Cay symmetric wave function corresponds to a (first-order) saddle point. The lowest energy ROHF solution has only Cj symmetry, and corresponds to a localized double bond and a localized electron (radical). Relaxing the double occupancy constraint, and allowing the wave function to become UHF, re-establish the correct Cay symmetry. Bergmann has suggested that oxidation is ruled out at positions (where hydration occurs readily) which are not accessible to the enzyme after the pteridine is adsorbed on it. Total reflux exists in a distillation column, whether a binary or multicomponent system, when all the overhead vapor from the top tray or stage is condensed and returned to the top tray. The fate of areas of south-eastern American deciduous forests which were dominated, before the arrival of the pathogen, by chestnut and species of oak has been traced (Fig. 10) over nearly 40 years (Day Monk, 1974). The demise of chestnut from its standing as a canopy dominant was rapid, taking about 20 years, with a complete failure to return. During this period eeosystem productivity was reduced (as shown by a reduction in tree basal area. Fig. 10). However, the place of chestnut in the forest has been taken by a number of species, in particular oak and tulip tree, which have steadily increased in dominance. The community has clearly changed markedly but the ecosystem as a whole has shown complete recovery, in terms of re-establishing tree basal area. The place of chestnut in the oak-chestnut forests has been taken by other native species. So in the context of conservation, although the loss of chestnut is unfortunate, it has not been at the eost of an invasion of alien species of tree. [Pg.23]
