Radial soil pressure that is resulting in stress is no usually uniform. Interestingly enough, it is generally assumed that the radial soil pressure is uniform and equal to the vertical soil pressure at the crown of a pipe. It s very possible for buried pressure pipe to have an internal pressure greater than the radial external pressure applied by the soil. Therefore, wall compressive stress is rarely factored in when working with pressurized pipe. Thermodynamic properties of PVC and CPVC pipe are shown in Table 6.3. [Pg.116]

Figure 8 Slices through the median planes of 3D 300 MHz T2W images (TE = 6.5 ms, TR = 1.5 s, multiecho segmerttatlon, or RARE, factor = 32, TEeffeotive = 104 ms) of kidneys from a control rat (A), and from rats treated with an inner cortical (B) and papillary (C) toxin. Note the clear differentiation in the control kidney between cortex, medulla and papilla, and also the good definition of perirenal fat and adrenal glands. Note also the evolution of a hyperintense band in the cortical toxin-treated kidney reflecting derangement of renal tubular function and water buildup in this region. The papillary toxin evokes a loss of papillary-medullary contrast. Marked swelling of both treated kidneys is also obvious and easily quantifiable. In any case, I eventually recovered (and so did Jerry), but my immune system must have suffered serious damage, which manifested itself three years later, when I collapsed in my office one day and was found to be bleeding internally from a form of rare stomach cancer, which necessitated major surgery but was fortunately localized. I again recovered and have had no further difficulties since. Whether weakening and knocking out my immune system to overcome the previous problems had any effect is not clear, but it could have been a factor. Despite my health problems I was able to continue my work without much interruption, and the scientific productivity of my group has not... [Pg.117]

One of the factors responsible for the rather wide variation in a values for benzene is the presence of ji-clectrons in the molecule, which can cause its adsorption to acquire a specific character if the adsorbent is polar (Chapter 1, p. 11). On hydroxylated silica, for example, the heat of adsorption is much higher than on the dehydroxylated material - on the latter solid indeed the interaction is so weak that a Type HI isotherm results (Fig. 2.19). Unfortunately c-values are rarely quoted in the literature, but... [Pg.81]

Power Supplies and Controls. Induction heating furnace loads rarely can be connected directiy to the user s electric power distribution system. If the load is to operate at the supply frequency, a transformer is used to provide the proper load voltage as weU as isolation from the supply system. Adjustment of the load voltage can be achieved by means of a tapped transformer or by use of a solid-state switch. The low power factor of an induction load can be corrected by installing a capacitor bank in the primary or secondary circuit. [Pg.127]

This change is influenced by metaboHc hormone action rarely do any of the hormones or other influencing factors act independent of each other to regulate nutrient partitioning. Complex interactions aHow for integration of influences to accommodate a coordinated chronic regulation of nutrient use for maintenance or growth so that an animal may adapt to its environment (see Feeds AND FEED ADDITIVES). [Pg.408]

In passive immunotherapy immune globulin (Ig) is an effective replacement in most forms of antibody deficiency (14). In the past, plasma was used instead of immune globulin, but plasma is rarely indicated in the 1990s because of the risk of disease, particularly AIDS, transmission. Because plasma contains many factors in addition to immunoglobulins (Igs), plasma is, however, of particular value in patients with protein-losing enteropathy, complement deficiencies, and refractory diarrhea. [Pg.33]

Liquid—Liquid Extraction. The tiquid—tiquid extraction process for the rare-earth separation was discovered by Fischer (14). Extraction of REE using an alcohol, ether, or ketone gives separation factors of up to 1.5. The selectivity of the distribution of two rare-earth elements, REI and RE2, between two nonmiscible tiquid phases is given by the ratio of the distribution coefficients DI and D2 ... [Pg.544]

It is truly possible to imagine the characteristics of an ideal radiopharmaceutical only in the context of a specific disease and organ system to which it might be appHed. Apart from the physical factors related to the radioisotope used, the only general characteristic that is important in defining the efficacy of these materials is the macroscopic distribution in the body, or biodistribution. This time-dependent distribution at the organ level is a function of many parameters which may be divided into four categories factors related to deUvery of the radiopharmaceutical to a particular tissue factors related to the extraction of the compound from circulation factors related to retention of the compound by that tissue and factors deterrnined by clearance. The factors in the last set are rarely independent of the others. [Pg.473]

The potential of the reaction is given as = (cathodic — anodic reaction) = 0.337 — (—0.440) = +0.777 V. The positive value of the standard cell potential indicates that the reaction is spontaneous as written (see Electrochemical processing). In other words, at thermodynamic equihbrium the concentration of copper ion in the solution is very small. The standard cell potentials are, of course, only guides to be used in practice, as rarely are conditions sufftciendy controlled to be called standard. Other factors may alter the driving force of the reaction, eg, cementation using aluminum metal is usually quite anomalous. Aluminum tends to form a relatively inert oxide coating that can reduce actual cell potential. [Pg.563]

Hereditary deficiency of Factor V is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Combined deficiencies of Factors V and VIII have been identified in several families. [Pg.174]

Deficiency of Factor VII is relatively rare and inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder. Deficiency of Factor VII has been reported to be associated with bond abnormal bleeding and thrombotic tendencies. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli have been reported in affected individuals. There is a very high frequency of Factor VII deficiency in people with the Dubin-Johnson syndrome, which is a congenital disorder of Hver function. [Pg.174]

Congenital deficiency of Factor XI is a relatively rare coagulopathy that has been reported as both an autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive trait. This deficiency state occurs predominantly in the Jewish population. Most patients with this deficiency state remain asymptomatic until trauma or surgery is encountered. Spontaneous hemorrhage is rare in this population. [Pg.174]

Congenital deficiency of Factor XII is inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Deficiency of this factor is rarely associated with any coagulopathy. It has been observed that people deficient in this factor may have an increased frequency of thromboembolic compHcations. [Pg.174]

Copper is required for all forms of aerobic and most forms of anaerobic life. In humans, the biological function of copper is related to the enzymatic action of specific essential copper proteins (66). Lack of these copper enzymes is considered a primary factor in cerebral degeneration, depigmentation, and arterial changes. Because of the abundance of copper in most human diets, chemically significant copper deficiency is extremely rare (67). [Pg.212]

Errors in compressibihty factors tabulated for over 6500 data points rarely exceed 2 percent except in the critical region, where 15 percent errors may be expected and 50 percent errors can occur. For mixtures near the critical point, special techniques are available as discussed in the sixth chapter of the Technical Data Book. [Pg.402]
