Ranking factor

Within the set of location factors it is common to distinguish between quantitative and qualitative factors, often without properly defining the difference between them. In the course of this work, factors that have a directly measurable financial impact will be referred to as quantitative factors and all other location factors will be considered of qualitative nature. A further distinction can be drawn between qualifying and ranking factors (cf. Pellerin et al. 2003, p. 268) with the former specifying minimum requirements and the latter being used to rank feasible alternatives. 

The method of prior ranking factors has been unsuccessfully applied on the data in Problem 2.4 about factors that affect the petroleum oils refining procedure by phenol. A design matrix was constructed for this reason and for all sixteen factors, for an experimental screening by the method of random balance. WODCA offers four different disconnection strategies to identify strategic bonds in the target (1) aliphatic bonds (2) aromatic substitution (3) carbon-heteroatom bonds and (4) polycyclic compounds. Each strategy provides its own rules and results in a ranking factor for a bond between 0 and 100. The ranking is relative to the current chemical environment of the bond. The second rated factor is one in which Acme excels slightly over competitors. This might provide a way to increase its business with accounts prizing this performance factor. The third factor points to another clear-cut opportunity to promote its capabilities. However, the low ranking (10th) may mean improvements in this area are unlikely to improve competitive position.

Once the review is completed, the group should discuss required work for the upcoming year, add items not completed the previous season, and revise the priority ranking, factoring (a) what items are most critical to ensure reliable site operations, and (b) what work can be accomplished using existing funding and/or equipment capability.

Brainstorming technique is normally used among a panel of experts to identify all the possible factors, levels, their interactions and other pertinent information about the optimisation problem. Sometimes factor screening may be required to provide a quick and simple way of ranking factors according to their importance in the optimisation. This will reduce the number of identified factors in order to perform the optimisation more efficiently.
