Quick fix

Existing facihties present daily bulk soflds flow problems soflds flow testing and analysis saves many hours of expensive downtime and thousands of dollars, thus moving from the complication of quick-fix solutions that are not satisfactory, to proven engineering solutions that work every time. 

The final step in the process of standardizing our columns was to try and maintain the high quality of columns from batch to batch of gel from the manufacturer. This was done by following the basic procedures outlined earlier for the initial column evaluation with two exceptions. First, we did not continue to use the valley-to-peak ratios or the peak separation parameters. We decided that the D20 values told us enough information. The second modification that we made was to address the issue of discontinuities in the gel pore sizes (18,19). To do this, we selected six different polyethylenes made via five different production processes. These samples are run every time we do an evaluation to look for breaks or discontinuities that might indicate the presence of a gel mismatch. Because the resins were made by several different processes, the presence of a discontinuity in several of these samples would be a strong indication of a problem. Table 21.5 shows the results for several column evaluations that have been performed on different batches of gel over a 10-year period. Table 21.5 shows how the columns made by Polymer Laboratories have improved continuously over this time period. Figure 21.2 shows an example of a discontinuity that was identified in one particular evaluation. These were not accepted and the manufacturer quickly fixed the problem. 

Clearly, this kind of problem requires more than a quick-fix solution if operational stability is to be attained. 

Industry has been looking for quick fix solutions for the last 10-15 years. Learning is not embedded in the culture—this is a business based on scientific endeavor with a core culture of individualism and heroic individuals. ... 

Here, we pointed to the problem of theoretical representation, in particular, in two aspects of theory (i) the existence of highly mobile atoms at the surface such as hydrogen, which are usually not considered in the atomistic models and (ii) the importance of bandgaps and relative energy levels of electronic states, which is often distorted in local density approximations. In both respects, a quick fix to the problem is not very likely. However, as both theory and experiment continue to be developed and applied in common research projects, it can be expected that the actual understanding of the processes involved in reaction on model catalysts will substantially improve over the next 10 years. After all, the ability to trace reactions and to account for the position and charge state of each reactant is already a realization of what seemed 20 years ago a fiction rather than fact. 

There are conjectures that the above three schemes may be quickly fixed by running a pseudo random generator through a live data scheme twice, where the later run will clear all the effects of the earlier one. This may make the non-functional CLBs that were used as the pseudo-random generator appear functional. While this heuristics is interesting, we will show later in the appendix that it does not work for this case. It may not be a trivial task to fix these schemes. 

One grievous error sometimes made in industrial laboratories that stress the quick fix is the concept that electrochemical processes can be studied by doing experiments on whole cells without examining the processes at the working electrode. One of the several aims of this book is to diminish the occurrence of such attitudes. 

Even if a doctor decides that weight loss medication may help a patient, it s still no quick fix. Diet and exercise are part of any weight loss program, and the patient is required to follow these measures in addition to taking pills. 

Sometimes people with eating disorders abuse diet pills as part of their weight-control efforts. In search of a "quick fix," sufferers may also abuse substances like the following, which can have dangerous results ... 

Having taken the time to confirm a problem exists and having determined why and how it came about the opportunity exists to create a plan which will be appropriate, timely and thorough. The latter point is the most important as the thoroughness of the plan will mean the action taken will follow through to take care of side issues and so be more than a quick fix. 

The focus is on quick fixes without assessing long-term impact. 

Results obtained using this procedure have shown high correlation with fixed-capital investment estimates that have been obtained with more detailed techniques. Properly used, these factoring methods can yield quick fixed-capital investment requirements with accuracies sufficient for most economic-evaluation purposes.

Another problem with the transport models is that they assume complete equilibrium between melt and solid throughout the melting regime. The error message RETURN WITHOUT GOSUB is usually the consequence of the common practice of putting subroutines at the end of a program. The computer finishes the main routine and continues through to the first subroutine until it reaches the RETURN statement. The quick fix is to place an END statement between the main routine and the first subroutine. For example, if subroutines begin at line 5000, add a line 4999 END. 

The first major resource that you can use for troubleshooting a problem is your own brain. Your brain can hold lots of information. We remember almost everything we re exposed to. For this reason, the best troubleshooters are usually the people who have been exposed to the most problems. They have seen several different types of problems and their solutions. If they run into a particular problem, they may have seen it before and can quickly fix the problem. 

Similarly, often people taking buspirone need a lot of encouragement to keep taking the medication long enough to get benefit. This is especially the case for those looking for a "quick fix." Studies show that the benefits of buspirone are still increasing after three to six months of use. 

Beth, Marianne, and Dicksen have gathered a lot of information on tools like metrics and lifecycle analysis. They have also gathered information on what a number of companies have done and why. There are no silver bullets or quick fixes in the book. None of the companies is close to operating in a truly sustainable way. They have taken on different approaches so may be ahead in one area while not engaged in another area at all. But credit is due they are leaders out there trying to forge a path.

Or try adding 16 drops of 2 percent sodium chlorite (available from many health practitioners and health food stores) to each quart of distilled or ionized water. Alternatively, add a teaspoon or two of pure baking soda to each quart of pure, alkaline water.3 This mixture makes a great quick fix to restore balance, and most people find they adapt to the taste. And don t forget that adding fresh lemon juice to a glass of water is an excellent way to alkalize your body.
