This multivariate approach using key process data features to predict injection molded part quality was found to be highly successful in these two experiments. A simple DOE was run that induced statistical variation in the data yet still produced visually acceptable parts. A multivariate model was then created that captured the acceptable processing window within the DOE. Parts were then rejected when limits were set outside of the process window or when parts were within model limits but the correlation structure of the data changed which resulted in flashed or short parts. This multivariate fault detection system can be quickly and easily setup using existing machine signals to provide accurate on-line part quality predictions.
