Qualitative analysis enantiomers

Native and microcrystalline cellulose precoated plates are used in the life sciences for the separation of polar compounds (e.g. carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, amino acids, nucleic acid derivatives, phosphates, etc) [85]. These layers are unsuitable for the separation of compounds of low water solubility unless first modified, for example, by acetylation. Several chemically bonded layers have been described for the separation of enantiomers (section 10.5.3). Polyamide and polymeric ion-exchange resins are available in a low performance grade only for the preparation of laboratory-made layers [82]. Polyamide layers are useful for the reversed-phase separation and qualitative analysis of phenols, amino acid derivatives, heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, and carboxylic and sulfonic acids. Ion-exchange layers prepared from poly(ethyleneimine), functionalized poly(styrene-divinylbenzene) and diethylaminoethyl cellulose resins and powders and are used primarily for the separation of inorganic ions and biopolymers. [Pg.525]

Main biodegradation products of LAS, sulfophenyl carboxylates (SPCs), were separated by CE using a-cyclodextrin as the chiral selector [6]. The best separation of enantiomers was achieved with 60 mM a-cyclodextrin in a 20 mM citrate buffer at pH 4.0 with an uncoated fused-silica capillary. The method was applied for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of SPC in primary sewage effluents with a detection limit of 1 p,g L-1. [Pg.109]

Chiral compounds are frequently foimd among the flavor volatiles of fruits and, like many naturally occurring chiral compounds, one enantiomer usually exists with a greater preponderance when compared with its antipode. Chiral odor compounds may show qualitative and quantitative differences in their odor properties (7). For example, (/ )-(+)-limonene has an orange-like aroma while (5)-(-)-limonene is turpentine-like (5)-(+)-carvone is characteristic of caraway while its enantiomer has a spearmint odor (2). However, other chiral compounds, such as y 6-lactones, show very little enantioselectivity of odor perception (7). The occurrence of chiral flavor compounds in enantiomeric excess provides the analyst with a means of authenticating natural flavorings, essential oils, and other plant extracts. The advent of cyclodextrin-based gas chromatography stationary phases has resulted in considerable activity in the analysis of chiral compounds in flavor extracts of fruits, spices and other plants (i-7). [Pg.70]
