Pyridoxine for

Vukelja SJ, Lombardo FA, James WD, Weiss RB. Pyridoxine for the palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia syndrome. Ann Intern Med 1989 lll(8) 688-9. [Pg.1418]

Sensory neuropathy was reported as an adverse effect in eight patients with homocystinuria who took 600-1200 mg/day of pyridoxine for 4-22 years. Nerve conduction studies of the sural nerve in five affected patients showed abnormalities in four (21). Neuropathies have been observed in women taking doses as low as 50-500 mg/day for one to several months (22,23). [Pg.2982]

Aluminum has been suggested to be a risk factor in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease. In experimental work, aluminum significantly impairs dendritic connectivity within the rat hippocampus. When rats were fed pyridoxine for thirty days following aluminum injections the branch points in all areas of the hippocampus increased significantly (45). This effect might be due to the effect of pyridoxine on neurotransmitter and polyamine syntheses. [Pg.191]

Due to its vitamin nature, five separate groups of investigators almost simultaneously isolated, established the constitution of, and synthesized pyridoxine. For some bacteria, however, extracts from natural material were more effective than expected from the content of pyridoxine this led to the discovery of pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. Later, pyridoxal phosphate was recognized as the active group of various enzymes of amino acid metabolism. [Pg.112]

Several lower fungi have already been found to require pyridoxin for growth, while in. some groups related organisms have not required it as a nutrient, probably being able to synthesize it for themselves. [Pg.142]
