Reciprocating Pumps There are three classes of reciprocating pumps piston pumps, plunger pumps, and diaphragm pumps. 

Leakage past diesel fuel injection pump plunger in worn equipment may occur can result in hot restart problems whereby fuel leaks past the injection plunger in hot equipment restarting may be impossible until the engine cools down.

A backpack sprayer is similar to a push-pull sprayer, except that it is a self-contained unit (tank and pump) and is carried on the operator s back. A mechanical agitator plate may be attached to the pump plunger. Capacity of these sprayers is usually less than five gallons. Figure 8.7 shows a pest control worker using a backpack sprayer in a greenhouse.

High water-content fluids are used in some hydrauhc systems where work-stroke speeds are very low, eg, large freight elevators and large forging and extmsion presses. Pressures in these systems may be from 13.8—20.7 MPa (2000—3000 psi). Vertical in-line pumps with packed plungers and special axial—piston pumps are used with these fluids. 

The most important stainless steel [12597-68-1] series are the 200-, 300-, and 400-series. The 300-series, primarily 302, 304, and 316, is used in the dairy industry, whereas the 400-series is used for special appHcations, such as pump impellers, plungers, cutting blades, scrapers, and bearings (Table 11). Surface finishes are specified from No. 1 to No. 8 (highly poHshed) the No. 4 finish is most commonly used. 

Positive Pumps. Positive pumps employed by the food industry have a rotating cavity between two lobes, two gears that rotate in opposite directions, or a crescent or stationary cavity and a rotor. Rotary positive pumps operate at relatively low speed. Fluid enters the cavity by gravity flow or from a centrifugal pump. The positive pump also may use a reciprocating cavity, and may be a plunger or piston pump. These pumps are not truly positive with respect to displacement, but are used for metering product flow. 

A duplex outside-end-packed plunger pump with pot valves, of the type used with hydraulic presses and for similar service, is shown in Fig. 10-49. In this drawing, plunger A is direct-connec ted to rod B, while plunger C is operated from the rod by means of yoke D and tie rods.
