In an experimental study of a small air-lift pump(6), (25 mm. diameter and 13.8 m overall height) the results were expressed by plotting the efficiency of the pump, defined as the useful work done on the water divided by the energy required for isothermal compression of the air, to a basis of energy input in the air. Friction Coefficient. In the design of a heat exchanger, the pumping requirement is an important consideration. For a fully developed laminar flow, the pressure drop inside a tube is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the inside tube diameter. In 1961, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) iatroduced a chemical pump standard (29), known as ANSI B73.1, that defined common pump envelope dimensions, connections for the auxiUary piping and gauges, seal chamber dimensions, parts mnout limits, and baseplate dimensions. This definition was to ensure the user of the availabiUty of iaterchangeable pumps produced by different manufacturers, as well as to provide plant designers with standard equipment. Techniques for handling sodium in commercial-scale appHcations have improved (5,23,98,101,102). Contamination by sodium oxide is kept at a minimum by completely welded constmction and inert gas-pressured transfers. Residual oxide is removed by cold traps or micrometallic filters. Special mechanical pumps or leak-free electromagnetic pumps and meters work well with clean Hquid sodium.
