Psychotomimetics effective doses

Although more stimulating antidepressants (e.g., bupropion, SSRIs, venlafaxine, or certain MAOIs) do not potentiate alcohol, they can produce insomnia. To minimize this problem, the dose may be given earlier in the day. TCAs may cause episodes of excitement (rare), confusion, or mania, usually in patients with an underlying psychotic illness, suggesting that a preexisting disorder must be present for these drugs to exert any psychotomimetic effects.

The term psychotomimetic was coined to compare the effects of hallucinogens to the symptoms of schizophrenia and other psychotic conditions. However, the effects produced by hallucinogens and mental illness are qualitatively different. While drug-induced hallucinations tend to be more visual, auditory hallucinations are most common in schizophrenia. The hallucinogenic drugs discussed here may induce positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations), but do not induce the negative symptoms (e.g., cognitive deficits, social withdrawal) of schizophrenia. 

It is usual to classify as psychotomimetic, substances which produce predominantly psychotic effects in low concentrations. Many other drugs (cocaine, amphetamine and atropine, for instance) have psychotomimetic side effects or are effective psychotomimetics in relatively high doses. They are, therefore, not usually grouped with the psychotomimetic drugs, but since the criteria of psychotomimetic action are rather imprecise, differences of opinion do arise concerning the classification of some of the less active substances.
