Selecting the Sampling Point The selection of the sampling point is based primarily on supplying the analyzer with a sample whose composition or physical properties are pertinent to the control function to be performed. Other considerations include selecting locations that provide representative homogeneous samples with minimum transport delay, locations that cohect a minimum of contaminating material, and locations that are accessible for test and maintenance procedures. 

Sample Withdrawal from Process A number of considerations are involved in the design of sample-withdrawal devices that wih provide representative samples. For example, in a horizontal pipe that conveys process fluid, a sample point on the bottom of the pipe wih collect a maximum amount of rust, scale, or other solid materials being carried along by the process fluid. In a gas stream, such a location will also collect a maximum amount of liquid contaminants. A sample point on the top side of a pipe will, for liquid streams, collec t a... 

The following sections discuss classes of reactions in which multiple pathways appear, outline methods of probing and predicting their behavior, provide representative examples of such reactions, and examine the ramifications of multiple pathways on our understanding of reaction mechanisms. 

A third factor affecting the quantity to be processed is the scale of the processing operation. A laboratory-scale operation will typically require less sample than a pilot-scale operation and much less than a commercial scale operation. Throughout the process, each unit operation must be supplied sufficient material to operate the process adequately while providing representative samples from the process.

The magnitude of the solar heating is indicated by the so-called solar constant. In space, at the radius of the earth s orbit, the solar constant is about 443 Btu/(h)(ft2) (1396 W/m2). However, solar radiation is attenuated by passage through the atmosphere it is also reflected diffusely by the atmosphere, which itself varies greatly in composition. Table 7.2 provides representative values of the solar constant for use at ground level, as well as of the apparent daytime temperature of the sky for radiation purposes.

The first measurements of Pb isotopes in Greenland snow were reported in 1993 (45). The samples were taken from a 10.7 m long, 10.5 cm diameter, snow core drilled at Summit, central Greenland, in 1989 (72°35 N, 37°38 W, mean annual accumulation rate 21.5 g cm year ). Cores were drilled with a polycarbonate auger to minimise the Pb contamination. The core contained snow deposited between the years 1967 and 1988. The 3.23 km elevation of the site provided representative samples of free tropospheric aerosols. An expanded data set and a more complete description and interpretation of these data were later reported by Rosman et al. (46). The latter included samples from the upper part of a 70 m snow core including snow deposited between 1960 and 1974. Data on all four Pb isotopes were given for these samples ( Pb/ Pb, ° Pb/ ° Pb and Pb/ °" Pb). Aliquots of these samples were also analysed for heavy metals by Boutron et al. (47) who showed there was a reduction in the Pb concentration in Greenland snow after 1970, which they attributed mainly to the reduction in the use of alkyl-leaded petrol.
