Protective behavior

Morichi et al. [3.29] showed with 54 different bacteria and bacteria-strains, that the a-COOH-, the a-NH2- and the guaidino-groups played an important role in the protective behavior of arginine. In the opinion of the authors, the common quality of the three groups was their ability to form hydrogen bonds. [Pg.215]

The association of inputs with housing values (which accrue to the homeowner as well as the neighborhood more generally), suggests some obvious instrumental motivations not only for chemical application but for the positive association between such practices and community values. As most realtors will tell you, lawn upkeep is a relatively inexpensive investment for maintaining property values. In follow-up discussions, some lawn owners explicitly told us that their lawn care inputs were investments in their homes. Indeed, people with higher incomes and expensive homes have much more capital-in the form of an existing manicured lawn-to protect with chemical applications. Despite any expectation of social reward for environmentally protective behavior, homeowners are actually rewarded for environmentally detrimental behavior. [Pg.98]

Oxide films are often protective in the sense of hindering further oxidation, but this is not always the case. Pilling and Bedworth made an early attempt (1923) to rationalize the protective behavior of oxide films on the basis of the volume occupied by the oxide relative to the volume of metal from which it was formed. If the molar volume V° of oxide per mole of metal is less than the molar volume of the metal, the scale will be under tension as it forms and will tend to crack and so be nonprotective. An... [Pg.103]

The formation of hydrolysis products, in the case of zinc phosphate, depends on the permeability of the protective coating. The permeability of the protective coating itself is influenced by the type of resin used, and in particular, by the PVC (Pigment Volume Concentration). This means that the choice of resin, pigments and fillers and the complete formulation have an important influence on the corrosion protection behavior of protective coatings containing zinc phosphate [5.69]. [Pg.215]

SAIE corrosion protection emphasizes the fact that the corrosion protection of a metal depends on the overall corrosion protective behavior of an entire system. If a plasma polymerization coating is changed, all factors must be optimized to yield the best result that can be attributed to the change. The essence of interface engineering lies in the tailoring of surfaces to facilitate the equilibration of surface states of different materials. [Pg.5]

The main aim of SAIE is the complete elimination of heavy metals from the coating systems an approach that primarily relies on tenacious water-insensitive adhesion and good barrier characteristics of a primer has been taken. It should be pointed out that this approach is theoretically incompatible with the approach that utilizes the primers with corrosion inhibitors, e.g., chromated primers. This is because a primer with super barrier characteristics would not allow the migration of inhibitors and would not provide enough water for their electrochemical reaction to form corrosion protection products, as described in Chapter 28. In order to further elucidate the SAIE concept, both chromated and nonchromated spray primers were employed to generate two types of plasma coating-modified systems, and their corrosion protection behaviors were investigated in this study. [Pg.679]

The use of traditional media has an influence which is directly proportional to the level of famiharity with the subject and to the protective individual behavior. More than newspapers, the use of the Internet has been found to be a major factor influencing concerns, pro-ban attitudes and protective behaviors. TV is not correlated to any of the attitudes studied. [Pg.3]

Somewhat paradoxicahy, confidence in the FDA does not play an important role in protective behaviors (whereas the role of such an agency is precisely to induce such behavior when a potential hazard exists or, in contrast, to assert their lack of necessity when the risk is not real). [Pg.3]

The results were positive and promising. Bagherzadeh et al. [81] found that the anticorrosion performance of a two-component water-based epoxy resin coating system was improved by adding only 0.02 wt% nano-PANI. Ahmad et al. [82] investigated the corrosion protection behavior of waterborne resorcinol formaldehyde (RF)-cured composite coatings of poly(l-naphthylamine) (PNA)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) on mild steel, and even superior corrosion protective performance was observed in different corrosive media when compared with the reported solvent-based conductive polymer coatings. [Pg.279]

Occupational health promotion is relatively easy in large factories. However, in small workshops or salons, the employer has a direct, dominating role. His protective behavior or lack thereof sets a standard and, furthermore, the communal aim of obtaining profit makes employees accept a low-budget (i.e., poor) standard of protection. Prevention such as using protective gloves is hampered by this attitude (Table 2) (Wulfhorst and Schwanitz 1996). [Pg.442]

As a means of both secondary and tertiary prevention, a combination of one-to-one consultation (interview and advice), followed by a group seminar with practical training, a repetitive seminar and a workplace visit has proven to be effective. During the initial consultation, the individual health and disease concept, respectively, are assessed, and the degree of motivation for improvement of protective behavior is... [Pg.442]

The superprimer network is fairly hydrophilic. X-ray reflection results of silane-resin films have shown that these siloxane-containing primers actually contain small voids that attract water into the coating. As the water penetrates the voids, it does not make the coating swell [64]. It only allows the less soluble Cr-free pigments to move in the voids and leach out on-demand to protect the metal from corrosion. This on-demand protection behavior has been studied by exposing scribed panels to corrosive environments and subsequently the surfaces and the cross-sections of the samples have been examined by SEM/EDX for residues of pigments and corrosion products [7-11, 27-30, 61-63]. [Pg.132]

Generally, this protective behavior of alloys is desirable. In other words, as the formation of nuclei of all potential oxides (non-protective and protective) cannot be avoided at the beginning of oxidation, it is most important that the slowest growing oxide is also the most stable oxide in the system, and thus grows at the interface between the faster growing part of the oxide scale and the... [Pg.79]

Figure 6>16. In sulfidizing gases iron aluminides are significantly more resistant than alumina-forming FeCrAl alloys. Sulfidizing environment (Pq = 4 X 10" atm Psj = 9 x 10" atm) at 875 °C. For Fe-Al the transition to protective behavior occurred between 18.7 and 22 at.% A1 (data of Natesan, 1997). Figure 6>16. Later (Sanctis, 1995) they evaluated the behavior of these same coatings with respect to nitridation in an anhydrous ammonia atmosphere in a temperature range between 400°C and 600°C. The results showed a substantial increase in resistance to nitridation of the coated steels in comparison with the uncoated substrates. The measurement of corrosion rates in samples treated for 20 h at temperatures between 400°C and 600°C show that the uncoated 304 and 316 samples underwent significant attack at 400° C, Figure 19-8. In contrast, SiOa coated steels did not show appreciable corrosion and the protective behavior subsists up to 600° C, even as the ammonia is almost whoUy dissociated. [Pg.1612]
