Prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors

Jager AK, Hutchings A, van Staden J. Screening of Zulu medicinal plants for prostaglandin-synthesis inhibitors.] Ethnopharmacol 1996 52 95-100. [Pg.64]

Young I can explain ATP. I did these experiments looking at intercellular Ca2+ waves and apyrase, and there is no effect. It turns out that the presence of either a prostaglandin transporter blocker, which is the same class as a Cl channel blocker, or a prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor, interrupts intracellular Ca2+ that is far away. It does not interrupt the intercellular Ca2+ through the gap junctions there are two different mechanisms. [Pg.184]

Certain other drugs also having uterine relaxant property are calcium channel blockers, prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors, progesterone, nitrites, anticholinergics, ethyl alcohol etc. [Pg.139]

Additive - the drugs have the same biochemical mechanism and will react with the target cells as long as receptor sites are available. Examples are the cyclooxygenase inhibitors (prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors) aspirin and acetaminophen (Tylenol ), antihypertensives propanolol and the rauwolfia alkaloids. [Pg.126]

Fluonnated agents such as flurbiprofen (11), flunisal(I2), diflunisal (13), and sulindac (14), acting as prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors, have been available for some time [5] The recent introduction of flunoxaprofen (IS), a lipoxygenase inhibitor, is notable It reportedly produces considerably less severe gastric disturbance [23]... [Pg.1121]

Our ancestors were, of course, ignorant of the neurobiology of opiates or prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors. In the distant past, when a person felt pain—particularly in the absence of evidence of injury—spiritual healers or medicine men developed fanciful myths to explain the cause of the pain, treated it with a decoction from the willow tree or myrrh shrub, and were often rewarded with elevated positions in their communities when their treatments seemed to magically make the pain go away and produced such an intense feeling of joy at the same time. With the advance of modern science, we know more about the mechanisms of pain and about the reasons why some drugs are better at treating it than others. [Pg.143]

Of the estimated annual 65 000 upper gastrointestinal emergency admissions in the UK, nearly 20% (including deaths in 3.4%) are attributable to the use of prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors (42). As might be expected with an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, the cyto-protective effects of prostaglandin E and prostacyclin... [Pg.19]

Chronic sahcylate intoxication is commonly associated with chronic daily headaches, lethargy, confusion, or coma. Since headache is a feature, it can easily be misdiagnosed if the physician is not aware that aspirin has been over-used. Depression of mental status is usually present at the time of diagnosis, when the serum salicylate concentration is at a peak. The explanation of depression, manifested by irritability, lethargy, and unresponsiveness, occurring 1-3 days after the start of therapy for aspirin intoxication, lies in a persistently high concentration of salicylate in the central nervous system, while the serum salicylate concentration falls to non-toxic values. The delayed unresponsiveness associated with sahcylate intoxication appears to be closely associated with the development of cerebral edema of uncertain cause. The encephalopathy that ensues appears to be directly related to increased intracranial pressure, a known effect of prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors it responds to mannitol (98). [Pg.24]

This phenomenon is not a true allergy, nor is it specifically caused by aspirin. It is the result of decreased synthesis of bronchodilatory prostanoids in the lung. In susceptible individuals, prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors may inhibit the synthesis not only of inflammatory prostanoids, but also of those prostanoids that contribute to patent airways. Thus, sensitivity to prostaglandin synthesis inhibitors can precipitate bronchoconstriction and blockade of airways. These events can arise from increased dosing of NSAIDs, increased frequency of dosage, or concurrent administration of more than one drug (e.g.. naproxen with ibuprofen). [Pg.203]
