A wide range of skin lesions has been reported, and most include skin dryness, rash, diffuse erythema, or urticaria, occurring in 5-12% of patients (20,281). However, severe dermatological complications are rare. In a prospective survey of 120 patients treated during 6-18 months for chronic viral hepatitis, only three developed lichen planus and one relapsing aphthous stomatitis (282).

In a prospective survey of 2346 patients aged 16 years and over who underwent mechanical ventilation within the first 48 hours of admission after trauma, 404 (17%) were exposed to parenteral nutrition and 192 (8.2%) met criteria for late adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) [57 ]. The incidence of late ARDS among those exposed to parenteral nutrition was 29% (116/404) compared with 3.9%... 

In a review of case reports and prospective surveys of adverse events focusing on Japanese acupuncture , almost all of the adverse reactions commonly seen in acupuncture practice, such as fatigue, drowsiness, aggravation of existing symptoms, minor bleeding, pain on insertion, and subcutaneous hemorrhage, were mild and transient [124 ]. 

In a prospective survey of 3097 infusion cholangiograms by Shehadi (14 ) the incidence of minor reactions was 1 in 16 (6.4%), moderate reactions 1 in 30 (3.3%), severe reactions 1 in 442 (0.2%), with one fatality in the 3097 cases (0.03%). The average incidence of reactions with standard injection of the cholangiographic medium was 12.67% whereas infusion cholangiography had a lower incidence of reactions (8.16%). No breakdown is given of the severity of the reactions using the 2 methods.
