Propolis bee glue

Wollenweber, E. et al., A novel caffeic acid derivative and other constituents of Populus bud excretion and propolis (bee-glue), Z. Naturforsch, 42c, 1030, 1987. [Pg.727]

Propolis (bee glue) has been used widely in folk medicine in some European countries (e.g., Denmark). It contains, among other things, well-known sensitizers such as cinnamic acid and vanillin. When a commercial propolis ointment was incorporated in the standard patch test series in a Danish dermatology department, 20 of 295 showed positive reactions (Petersen 1977). [Pg.360]

Propolis (bee glue), a potent allergic sensitizer, is a dark yellowish-brown resinous substance with strong adhesive properties. Mixed with wax, it is used by bees to seal up the services in their hives. The color and composition of propolis varies from area to area, depending on its tree source. Propolis preparations are available as powders, ointments and cosmetic moisture creams. The beekeeper inevitably comes into contact with it whenever he handles his hives or honey combs. Allergic contact dermatitis from propolis is an occupational hazard for beekeepers [i, 2]. The hands and arms are usually affected but, in some cases, the eruption starts on the face and neck [2]. Swelling of the face and eyelids is a conspicuous feature [2]. [Pg.840]

Propolis (SEDA-12, 410) (SEDA-13, 459) (SEDA-18, 4) or bee-glue is a resinous material used by bees to seal hive walls and to strengthen the borders of the combs and the hive entrance. It has antiseptic, antimycotic, and bacteriostatic properties and is found in cosmetics and natural products for self-treatment. [Pg.238]

Caffeic acid dimethyl allylic ester is the major allergen of poplar bud resins and of propolis, the bee glue derived almost exclusively from poplar buds. [Pg.1134]

Propolis or bee glue is a complex resinous mixture of different plant exudates, which is gathered, modified and used by honeybees as a general purpose sealer and draught excluder in their hives. [Pg.70]

The bee visits flowers in search of nectar and pollen, or visit trees for harvesting resin to make propolis. The propolis is used as glue and caulk to seal cracks in the hive. Bees also collect honeydew secreted by insects of the family Aphididae. [Pg.6]
