Propionibacterium acnes induced

Data indicating participation of PolyPs in overcoming stress were obtained in Propi-onibacteria. The PolyP component in the 31P NMR spectra of Propionibacterium acne increased after ultraviolet light irrardiation (Kjeldstad and Johnson, 1987) and after hyperthermia treatment (Kjeldstad et al., 1988). Such treatments, carried out in triplicate, induced an increase in the PolyP content, as observed by 31P NMR spectroscopy. One of the explanations for this might be that hyperthermia and ultraviolet light induce an oxidative stress in the cells, which increases the amount of PolyP (Kjeldstad and Johnson, 1987 Kjeldstad et al., 1988).

Oral isotretinoin (accutane) is approved for the treatment of severe nodulocystic acne vulgaris. The drug has remarkable efficacy in severe acne and may induce prolonged remissions after a single course of therapy. It normalizes keratinization in the sebaceous follicle, reduces sebocyte number with decreased sebum synthesis, and reduces Propionibacterium acnes, the organism that proves inflammation in acne. 

Other authors detected DNA from Propionibacterium acnes in lymph nodes from sarcoid patients (151,152). In addition, P. acnes stimulates BAL lymphocytes from sarcoid patients (153). Granulomata induced in a mouse model of P. acnes display many features of sarcoid granuloma (154).
