The third and newest modified natural mbber available is epoxidized natural mbber (ENR). This modification was actually discovered as early as 1922 (50), although the elimination of ring opening and side reactions to give a purely epoxidized material took another 50 years or so to achieve (51). The resulting polymer is a new material, with properties totally different from natural mbber, as iadicated ia Table 5. [Pg.271]

Dendrimers and hyperbranched polymers are globular macromolecules having a highly branched structure, in which all bonds converge to a focal point or core, and a multiplicity of reactive chain ends. Because of the obvious similarity of their building blocks, many assume that the properties of these two families of dendritic macromolecules are almost identical and that the terms dendrimer and hyperbranched polymer can be used interchangeably. These assumptions are incorrect because only dendrimers have a precise end-group multiplicity and functionality. Furthermore, they exhibit properties totally unlike that of other families of macromolecules. [Pg.483]

Properties total iron 58.1%, 3-FeOOH structure confirmed by XRD [661], specific surface area 51 iiT/g (original and stored) [568], 51.6 mVg [1319], wheat-grain shape [661], TEM image available [661]. [Pg.298]

Properties Total iron 48.1%, amorphous, TEM image available [661], 70 mVg (2 y stored sample, the original sample had a higher, but unspecified specific surface area [568]), 70.7 mVg [1319]. [Pg.313]

Because solutes disrupt the normal pattern of water structnre, solntions have freezing temperatures lower than that of pure water (Feeney, 1974) and solutions have boiling temperatures higher than that of pure water. Differences in freezing and boiling points are determined almost solely by the number of solute particles present and not by their properties. Totally dissociated compounds, such as table salt (NaCl), will have twice as much freezing point depression and boiling point elevation as will nondissociated compounds such as sucrose. Incompletely dissociated compounds will have intermediate effects. [Pg.99]

A substitution of the CH2OH part by the nonpolar methyl group, illustrated in 36 of Fig. 26, destroys the mesomorphic properties totally which is obvious since the hydrogen bond network (inside the columns) is severely perturbed, even disturbed in this case [123, 126]. [Pg.329]

It must not, however, be thought that the development of new polymers has come to an end. This is by no means the case. Polymer chemists continue to develop both new polymers and new polymerisation processes for older polymers. This leads not only to the introduction of polymers for special uses, which are often expensive, but also to the production of polymers speeially constructed to test theoretical understanding of how specific features of structure affect physical properties. Totally novel types of polymer are also synthesised with a view to investigating whether they might have useful properties. These developments are considered further in section 1.3.4, and the following section describes the chemical nature of polymers in more detail than has so far been considered. [Pg.7]

Equations fQ.io ) and fQ.ii ) express a simple but important relationship between partial molar properties and the corresponding property, total or molar, of the mixture. Another relationship can be derived for the differential of the partial molar property. We begin by taking the differential of eg. fQ.ioi keeping in mind that pressure and temperature are held constant ... [Pg.344]

Metals have some properties totally unlike those of other substances. Except for mercury, which is a liquid at room temperature, and gallium, which is a liquid at slightly above room temperature, all metals are solids. Some remain solids even at very high temperatures. Tungsten has a melting point of 3410°C. There are several properties common to the metals ... [Pg.471]

Occasionally in component design, transparency can be a very influential property. Total, glass-like clarity can only be found in amorphous thermoplastics. The most widely used of these are PC, PMMA, SAN (styrene... [Pg.58]

There are materials with low or no permeability to different environments or products. Barrier plastics are used with their technology not becoming more complex but more precise. Different factors influence performance such as being pinhole-fi ee chemical composition, crosslinking, modification, molecular orientation density, and thickness. The coextrusion and coinjection processes are used to reduce permeability while retaining other desirable properties. Total protection against vapor transmission by a single barrier material increases linearly... [Pg.391]

It is noteworthy that the poly-3-methylpentenamer thus obtained had more than 90% trans configuration and was an amorphous substance with properties totally different from the unsubstituted polypentena-mer. [Pg.108]

Copolymers of cycloolefins are readily obtained by catalytic copolyermization reactions under appropriate conditions. They can be random, block, or graft copolymers depending on the monomer reaetivity, catalyst nature, polymerization procedure, or reaction parameters and they may display physical and mechanical properties totally different from those of the corresponding homopolymers. [Pg.139]

The reactivity ratio rij/r of 6.85 0.30 was heavily in favor of the 1,3-disubstituted monomer it is obvious that 1,3-disubstitution enhances the stability of the cyclopentadienyl cation. These products displayed remarkable properties, totally different from those of the homopolymers. For instance, (1) they can be dissolved in benzene and the solution can be cast to yield transparent films, (2) the softening points of 150-155°C are somewhat higher than those of the homopolymers, and (3) the rate of oxidation and oxygen absorption upon exposure to air are found to be slower. These particular properties were attributed to the decreasing number of tertiary allylic structures in the copolymer chain as compared to the respective homopolymers. [Pg.141]

Similarly, copolymers of norbornene, with norbornene 0X0 derivatives such as those represented by (71) and (72), obtained in the catalytic presence of WClg/ Me4Sn, display properties totally different from those of the homopolymers [50] ... [Pg.149]

Similarly, grafting living polynorbornene onto polymers that contain carbonyl groups formed by conventional polycondensation reactions leads to triblock copolymers, (100), having properties totally different from those of the homopolymers [67],... [Pg.152]

We will arbitrarily define benchmark quality calculations here as those yielding results so accurate that they are generally more reliable than experiment. In the course of the article, we will focus on three principal properties total atomization energies (TAEs, Y,De values), geometries and related properties (such as rotational constants), and vibrational frequencies. We will show that it is presently possible, for small polyatomics, to obtain total atomization energies correct to 1 kJ mol (0.24 kcal mol ) on average, geometries to 0.001 A or better, and fundamental frequencies to a few cm . ... [Pg.115]
