Only one other synthesis from this review, the aldol self-condensation of cyclohexanone, followed by dehydrogenation of the initial products, is of preparative importance. It has even been used in the large scale industrial syntheses of 2,6-diphenyl-phenol (see 2.4). All the other routes mentioned in this account, are primarily of scientific interest and are not useful for larger scale preparative work. They ate, however, of interest insofar as they emphasize differences between the chemical properties of alkyl and aryl substituted phenols. 

In this chapter, the properties of a series of poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-methylalkylsiloxane) (PDM-PMAS) of various alkyl side-chain lengths are discussed. These polymers contain 3.5 mol % methylalkylsiloxane units and are prepared from the same precursor thus, any effects due to variations in the percentage of alkyl substitution and main-chain molecular weight differences and effects due to block distribution of the alkyl substituents are eliminated. 

In all of these mixed compounds, the substances possess the properties of both kinds of substitution products represented. The halogen nitro compounds, on reduction, yield halogen amines. The halogen amines are basic compounds, like the amines themselves, and form salts with mineral acids. The halogen cyanogen compounds possess the nitrile properties of alkyl cyanides, and on hydrolysis yield halogen acids. The cyanogen amines are, similarly, both acid nitriles and... 

Three NiMo-HNaY-alumina catalysts with similar composition were prepared by different methods and tested in the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethyl-DBT. It was found that the catalyst preparation method induces some changes of the characteristics of the deposited metallic species as well as of the acidic properties of the zeolite component. These changes affect the catalytic behavior in the hydrodesulfurization of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT. Acidic properties of the catalyst seem to be more important for the conversion of alkyl-substituted DBT. 

In quantum QSAR of pharmacological properties, several examples involve the description of the antitumor activity of compounds. For instance, both the hydro-phobicity and the LUMO energy were found to determine the activity of a series of alkyl-substituted phenols against Chinese hamster V76 tumor cells according to the following quadratic equation [94]... 

A series of alkyl-substituted poly(thieno[3,2-fe]thiophenes) was synthesized by cross-coupling and oxidative coupling reactions (2004MM6306). Their electronic properties were studied by UV Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. 

Matzger and coworkers [25] reported the synthesis of alkyl substituted poly(T32hTs) and studied their optical properties. It was found that 3,6-dinonyl substitution leads to a drastic increase in bandgap due to the twisting of adjacent T32bT units away from planarity.
