For the evaluation of the diffusion constant D at a time t, the potential difference relative to the potential of the intact, electrolyte-free metal/adhesive interface is fitted with respect to Eq. (22). For the ingress of sodium chloride from an aqueous solution of 0.5 m NaCl into the defect area as shown in Fig. 31.2, a diffusion coefficient of 1 x 10 cm s is calculated, even for highly stable adhesive/metal interfaces modified with an aminosilane adhesion promoter. Performing the diffusion measurement with other metal hahde solutions shows that an effective diffusion coefficient of the hydrated ion-pair, is measured by this method. This could be shown by changing the size of either the hydrated cation or anion, which resulted in a corresponding change in the measured diffusion coefficient (with smaller hydrated ions diffusing faster).

Ammonia contamination can affect both the air and fuel sides, regardless of from which side the contamination enters. Introduction of acid into the fuel cell to displace the ammonium ion from the proton exchange sites was unsuccessful in promoting performance recovery. Introduction of an air bleed was also of no impact. The cell will slowly recover performance after the contamination introduction is stopped, but the extent of this recovery will depend on the amount of contamination present and the cell might not fully recover even after several days.

Promoters perform an important function in the heat treatment of mixtures of butyl rubbers with fillers. Compounds based on the heat treated mixtures have better extrusion and calendering properties than they would have otherwise and their vulcanisates have greater resilience, elasticity, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and electrical resistivity. Various promoters have been withdrawn from the market recently as potential health hazards, but a dispersion of poly-dinitrosobenzene in inert filler, now marketed by Hughson Chemical as PolyDNB, is still available.
