Prolene

Polypropylene [9003-07-0] is made by the polymerization of propylene gas. Polypropylene (qv) sutures are available in clear (undyed) or blue (melt-pigmented with [phthalocyaninato(2-)] copper). Monofilament polypropylene sutures are sold under the trade names Deklene, Prolene, Surgdene, and Surgipro.

A 1 X 1 inch Prolene mesh was rinsed with 0.5 wt% of NaHCOs and dried. The mesh was then placed on a freshly prepared Agar plate in a petri dish and roughly 100 mg of a selected experimental adhesive applied across the mesh. The selected adhesive was cured overnight then sealed with parafilm the film thickness was about 0.6 mm.

The size of Gore-Tex sutures does not follow USP size classification but is designated by CV (i.e., cardiovascular). The diameter is measured in the material s pre-expanded form and the actual value of the suture is obviously larger because it contains >50% air by volume. For example, CV-4 Gore-Tex suture has a similar diameter (0.35 mm) to a 2-0 Prolene (0.303 mm). 

PVDF and PP sutures were found to be very similar in tensile breaking force and biocompatibihty in blood vessels. The three properties that most differentiate PVDF from PP sutures are creep behavior, the extent of iatrogenic trauma by a needle holder, and sterilization by y-irradiation. Over a period of 103 min, there was about 10% dimensional increase in PVDF sutures, while PP (Prolene) sutures had more than 50% increase. Thus, PVDF sutures have better resistance to creep than do PP sutures and hence are expected to be dimensionally more stable. However, PVDF exhibited more dimensional change than PP during the initial 30 min of creep testing.
